Unhappy Aww... Holly isn't feeling good.

I found Holly downstairs all alone downstairs this morning, and she saw me and curled into a ball. I assumed she was being naughty, so I immediately scoured the floor for torn up food items. (Hey, it's Holly, of course that's the reflex action.) Nothin'. I turned back to Holly and she was doing that nervous thing that she does where she half rolls over and her left rear leg twitches... usually does that when she's been caught. I asked her what she did, and went to check her facial hair for remnants. She kept rolling and shaking, so I pulled her into a sit and she squeaked.

Then (in a stroke of genius) I picked her up, which caused her to scream. So here I am on my knees, trying to feel every part of the 8-inch-tall dog's body to see what hurts, while Kirby's nose appears in my face (read: eye) every 3.5 seconds. All her joints are fine (she can walk, and I felt her down), she either has a bad tummy ache.. Or more likely- is very bruised up from her vaccines yesterday, unless she has some other back pain. She had to get one injection in each scapula, and moved the first time, so might have an extra poke.

I took her outside and she just sat in space on the lawn, so I brought her in and put her on her bed, and she hasn't moved since.

I hope she gets better... She's extra sad, not to mention, it's Thanksgiving here, so most vets are closed until Tuesday. Meanwhile Kirby wants her to get the heck up and play.

Can you take her temperature? What about check her hydration levels? Sticky/tacky gums? Gum color?

That will be a start to let you know if it's something to worry about. No vomiting or diarrhea? Appetite okay?

Both of my dogs have this heartbreaking pain reflex of hiding and making themselves tiny like they want to curl up alone and die.

Other than the pain, she seems okay, she just looks really sad. She had a normal poop last night, and is eating fine... Nothing makes a Holly happy like ingesting stuff... anything really. She walks slow with the tail down, and doesn't want to do stairs... carrying her down them is ackward since picking her up normally her screaming and leaping. She can only be picked up straight with her legs dangling... like air-lifting a cow.

I'm keeping her close (between preparing a Turkey) and trying to get her to stay still and sleep it off.

Sounds like it's just the body aches and a vaccine reaction. Just like humans they can get a little lethargic after a vaccine.

Bet she'll be better by tomorrow!

I know it's nothing, and the stuff-eating Holly will be back tomorrow. But I've never had this happen before. She just lays there and squeaks, it's so sad!

She mostly looks sad because she's stuck all curled up instead of in her bear rug position that she usually lies in. It's not Holly if it doesn't look like a bear rug!

This sounds very similar to what happened with Buddy at his last vet visit. They drew blood from his neck and we found out later he moved or jerked as they were doing it. We will never know if they hit a nerve or it was just very sore, but he acted the same way. He curled up in a ball, he had a hard time holding his head up and he was very lethargic. Sounds like just a reaction from the vaccines, but none the less it is sad to see them this way.

How is Miss Holly doing? Hope she is back to being a bear rug soon.

Forget it, some dogs just don't tolerate pain. Poor, poor Holly, hope she's feeling better today.
