Great Dane

Hey,

A friend of mine is looking for a Great Dane. They really seem to be doing thier research in looking for a dog. They are seriously considering resuce, but do not want to spend forever on a waiting list. Does anyone know how quick dogs are placed? Anyone know of a dane in needing a home?

What area are you in?

Please explain to them when adopting a dog it does take 2-3 weeks in most cases. The individuals involved in rescues most often have their own dogs, a foster or 2, and full time jobs.
I know first hand there is no shortage of Danes out there in rescue. Great Dane Rescue Inc. is a great group and have foster homes in several states.

FairyDogMother is in the Seattle, Washington area and she has two that need homes right now.

Most rescues its not to long before you get one. Look at shelters too. Some shelters let you take them within a week or less. Since its more spot the dog, apply, get that dog as soon as approved. It doesnt ussually take them long to approve apps.

I would contact a few local rescues and ask about how long it would be.

Yep, I've got 2 harlequins here. A 3 yr old George and 8 month old Patches.
See Spots, Spots posts here. Both are in the photos. Only Patches in on petfinder right now but you can see him either place here or petfinder.
Both are pb's too.

We're from Ontario. I'm not sure if they've checked pet finder yet. So far, from what I've heard they're looking in to registered resuces, there are a couple listed on the national Dane breed club. A couple of weeks wont bother them. But I think they were thinking they'd be waiting months. I'll pass along the information.

They don't really want to go to a breeder, because of the price tag and they don't want a show dog. I explained about the cost of a well bred dog being worth it. I did manage to talk them out of buying the Dane/Newife/pom cross. eks

What on earth is this???
All the rescues are registered or they can't be on petfinder.

buying the Dane/Newife/pom cross.
Sounds like they don't know what they want.

Do they even have any experience or knowledge of this breed? If they don't, they'll be hard pressed to find a group that will adopt to them unless they're in it just to move dogs which isn't most rescues, especially "registered" (whatever that means) ones.

Just sounds really strange to me.

Being in a great big hurry is a real put off to some of the better funded rescue organizations. It smacks of the dogs being an impulse decision. It takes time to check references and arrange premises checks, and often they might want to see how you handle the waiting period. Being in a rush would raise a giant red flag in my own breed rescue.

Maturity means knowing how to wait for the right dog, and needing immediate gratification often leads to adopters remorse. No good organization is going to rush just to get a dog in someones home because they are in a hurry. They are going to take all the time necessary to insure that this placement is the last placement, and doing it quickly does not do that.

What is the rush?
If they need a dog like tomorrow, the local shelter can give you just that.
I adopted a shelter dog last week and it took all of 15 minutes and $30 bucks.
I was appalled that the value of the dogs life was so little, but there you have it. (I did give them much more than $30, though, as it appeared to me that they needed it desperately.)

If they are worried about finances, have they considered the cost to feed a dane? The cost of health care etc.. Being a very large dog going through a foster or rescue, especially if an adult, is valuable information to have on the temperment, socialization of the dog etc. If you listen to FDM, who is involved at present with two danes, you will see how important that information is to have. A dog that pops into a shelter for a few days hardly is alot of information known about that dog. .. I have to agree, they need more time and thought into this. Any dog, but especially a dog as large as a dane, needs special consideration here...

By registered I think they were looking at ones that are associated with the breed club. In that its not me looking for the dog, its hard to know what they mean. As for experience with the breed, I don't think so. Although they have had many pets and large breed dogs.

They aren't looking for a dog tomorrow. They were just afraid of being stuck on a list for months. They didn't think they could handle waiting on a list not knowing whether or not they'll get a dog. Randomly hearing 6months down the road they've been approved or that there's a dog avaliable. I'm not up-to-date on how resuce works as the only one I'm overly familiar with is the Humane Society, so I don't know what kind of time frame there is to give them the information.

I suggested Resue to them as they were not looking for a show dog and age doesn't seem to be a big issue, although they would like a younger dog

They aren't worried about "finances" he's a doctor. lol. They just don't see the point in spending a ton of money on a show dog, when they don't intend to show, they don't care about pedigrees etc. He is obviously concerned about the health of his dog but, according to him, would rather spend that money on caring for the dog than padding a breeders pocket. I've had the discussion with him about paying now and saving later etc. But as far as he's concerned, your going to have problems anyway because of the narrow gene pool, and he really advocates for mix breeds, based on his medical research at school.

They, he and his wife, have been reading up, they like the breed. They've both had dogs in the past. They currently have a twp cats and a zoo's worth of other critters. They spoke with me because I'm involved in dogs and thought I might know of a breeder, rescue etc. So I'm trying to gather information for them. I've already spoken to a few people I know who own danes (I don't know any dane breeders) and have received some valuable information about things they should look for, breeders to avoid etc.
