A couple of Saturdays ago the SPCA brought a collie/husky mix named Christy to their adoption event at my store. She had a deformed leg, was six years old and had a long, shedding coat. I fell in love. I spent more time with her, snuggling, scritching and loving on her than I did work. When the time came for her to go back to the SPCA, I cried. I worried for her. Six year old deformed dogs don't find homes at this shelter very often. Only puppies do it seems.
I went on with my life, but I just couldn't stop thinking of her. Her family had abandoned her and kept changing their story as to why. She came in with another dog that had already been adopted. Now, alone and in a kennel, she was probably scared to death and confused. I just couldn't get her out of my mind. She deserved that love that her own family had denied her. She needed to once again be a part of a family. On Friday night, mere minutes before we closed I saw her again. Crud, I'm crying again. Anyway, she walked in on the end of a hot pink leash, in a hot pink collar, with a shiny, brand new nametag!!!! With her was her new family: two happy as can be children and their single mother. They had recently lost their own dog, another mutt from the SPCA and were so glad that Christy had come into their lives. She was truly a happy dog. The relaxation had returned to her face, the light was back and bouncing in her eyes. She was wagging her little tail and her little deformed leg was bounding along with the rest of her body. I was in tears as I approached the family and thanked them from the bottom of my heart for giving Christy a second chance at love and a family. Here's to you, Christy. May your new family spoil you rotten and make up for what your first family lacked. Last edited by RoughCollies; 12-01-2008 at 02:48 PM. |
