Can dogs in heat be spayed?

My American Bulldog had a litter of puppies 3 years ago. We wanted to breed once more, but it didn't work out. Now, we've decided that we will not breed her again. I have two questions - 1. Is there any risks when having your dog spayed at the age of 5 after already having a litter of puppies? 2. Can she be spayed during her heat? Thanks in advance for feedback.

Yes there are risks having a dog spayed while in heat. Higher chance for blood loss, and harder to do procedure because of organs being inflammed and larger. Some doctors will not spay during heat, others who feel comfortable with the procedure will do it. There is usually a higher cost for spaying while in heat.

My vet wouldnt spay my sealyham until she was at least 6 weeks past her heat cycle.. I just spayed her few weeks ago, did complete physical and blood work, she is 9 yrs old and had 3 litters.. The spay was a little longer due to her previous surgery.. She is perfectly fine now, was a little sore for first 2 days, used pain medication for her...

Hi and welcome to the forum. There is no way that i would spay one while in heat. Not unless it was really live or dead.
Most vets will not do spay while in heat.
