Smile Puppy's Weight

If a Boerboel male puppy is almost 4 months, how much shoud it weigh? The average amount? What would be considered a runt and what would be considered the huge? Thanks!!

With my labs both dogs, they were both between 20 and 25 lbs at 4 months old. From then until about 8 months old I found that they gained about 10 pounds a month. After 8 months they worked on filling out.

As for the runt it would be the pup who is smaller at whelp and may stay a few pounds smaller and maybe lighter boned then the rest of the litter. But then again a lot of times the runt pup at whelp catches up with the rest of the litter over time. You can't know the runt of the litter unles you know how big all of the pups were when born and for a few weeks after. Same with a big pup some are born big, some grow out of the standard and sometimes the biggest pups levels out over time.

It's hard to tell any of these things unless you watch the litter grow and or see a breeding from the same bitch to see what she puts on the ground.

What is the expected adult weight?
How heavy boned are they?

The breeder of the litter presumably knows how their lines develop and could guide you as to eventual sizes of each puppy. Good working knowledge of both sire and dam (as well as further back) would be a pretty dependable general indicator.

For comparison:
At four months a male Wolfhound is ± 65 lbs with an expected adult weight of about 180. A female might go 58 lb w/adult weight of 155 or so.

the mother is 26" 110 lbs and the father is 28" 150 lbs. She keeps them a bit lighter for working on the farm. The pup is 47 lbs. He was born 8/26/08. Does this sound small or large?

I am afraid to comment on whether this is "normal" as I am 100% ignorant about this breed- I don't even know what the standard asks for in terms of height and weight.

I will say that is you are teetering on buying this pup or not there are probably 300 things I would worry about besides size. If I was you I would be looking for some breed specific people to be asking these questions of. Is there an email list or breed contact people listed on the national club website?

Also- if you don't trust this breeder to be straight with you about this, that might be a red flag on the whole situation. How about talking to the breeder of the stud dog and the breeder of the dam?

For a large breed dog its roughly 10 pounds a month. ( the IW is an exception as well is a dane..). I would say a 4 month old should be between 42 to 48 pounds.( especially being a male). This breed does have some mass to them hince being a little bigger in weight. I am also assuming its exactly 4 months and not the tail end almost 5 months..

Have a talk with the breeder about it. We could give you a ballpark. She could give you the facts.

I already called and left a message so I should be hearing from them soon. They are 10 hours away and I'm going to visit soon. I was just wondering as I want the healthiest possible dog!! I don't want the smallest or the largest for health reasons. I really want an average sized dog with the best conformation to do weight pulling and obedience. Yeah the pup is 3 weeks from 4 months. Boerboels are 150-200 pounds standard. Thanks everyone!!

Not to rain on the parade, but if the dog is 4 months old, and the only one left; it probably doesn't have the best conformation, and is probably over-sized or under-sized, or has some obvious fault of some sort.

If you are looking for a very stable-built, well-conformed dog, finding a great breeder and going on a waiting list will be a better idea for you. Most breeders of any breed will not have a well-conformed dog as a "leftover" that they want to home. Not saying that the puppy definitely isn't what you want, but proceed with caution.
