New thread

My 13 year old GSD has this terrible disorder. It is heart breaking to watch her go downhill so quickly and there is very little that can be done for her. I actually googles Canine Degenerative Myelopathy and the article you have posted here came up. I wish there was more research done on this horrible condition.

That's very sad. At least it seems to be painless.

No it isnt.. The dog doesn't understand why they cant walk, or control their bowels.. Its a horrid disease as most degenerative diseases are. A degenerative disease rob the dog of their spirit.. And most dogs know it as they go through this process not to mention the heart break the owners feel in watching it happen.

The problem with most degenerative diseases is that there is usually no evidence of it being there until later in life. By then the dog if bred has produced a litter. That is why it is so important to know the health of the grandparents of a dog. If there is a degenerative condition, it should have showed up by then. At least these breeders did not knowingly breed a degenerative disease. Its like Cavaliers with degenerative heart conditions. Doesn't show up until later in life, so its necessary to know the health of the grandparents in genetic testings as well.

My female GSD was spayed. So no passing it on. I will sadly be euthanizing her before her quality of life is not there. I owe her that. She's been a loyal companion for years. She's 13 now.

She's pretty wobbly. But she's still going outside to do her business. Once she's up, she's up...just wobbly. But it's getting harder for her to get up now. I'll make the appt. soon I think. If not before Christmas...right after I'm thinking. This progresses quickly I am finding. I don't want to wait too long. But, I don't want to lose her too soon either. It's a tough one.

Honey she is 13.. I doubt its the condition. Probably just age. Give her some time and remember she may be more slow to rise. As long as she is happy ( eating, likes to go outside, other things she likes) its a good day. She could be wobbly for any number of reason- from arthritus etc. DM is an obvious disease.. Hardly mistaken. Maybe its just her age and needs the TLC you have been given her to make her life easier. ( ie a different door to go out so no stairs etc).
