question for luvin my dogs
What happened for your dog to have to have a second surgery? Just curious....trying desperately to avoid complications. Did he fall down or do too much?

I was stupid. I kept her contained in only one room and it was hardwood and slippery.
Where they had shortened the soft tissue and pinned the soft tissue for the luxating patella broke off before 10 days and the piece of bone with hardware was migrating into the joint. She was in loads of pain! I do hold myself responsible as I ought to. I had a bad experience with a crate ( my older dog ate his way out of his) so I had a mental block about the crate. I thought I could keep her quiet. I couldn't or didn't. Now, both dogs think the x pen is a grande place. I still worry because she wants to jump up on the couch (where she is not supposed to be) and off. I don't carry her 50+ pound bum up and down the stairs at this point, but I do still see pain restrictions in her behaviour. I would rather she feel some pain than do more damage, so we haven't been using pain meds for days. She will push whatever she can. Don't do what I did. It's worse the second time! Hands down! There was a point where both dogs and I were done! I had to function on maybe 2 hrs sleep and a ton of emotional response to her pain... Not good! |

I tried to crate him twice. Both times he fell in the crate and hurt his leg. Then I tried the x pen, no luck there either. He whines, chews at the wire, and refuses to lay down. I am in a carpeted room. I am on the floor with him. He has an area of about 2ft x2ft where he is laying on pillows. I cant get him to rest any other way. I am not allowing him to walk around the room. The only activity he is doing is rolling from side to side and sitting up at times. i carry him out to go to the bathroom..he does have to take a few steps in order to go. Once he is through I pack him back in. Since you have experience in this does this sound ok. I saw two vet over the weekend and both told me different thing. One said it was ok for him to bear weight when going to the bathroom, the other said to hold his legs up with a towel. I am not sure what to do. He is a small dog so not a problem controlling him and plus he doesnt want me out of his sight so as long as I am in view he will lay and watch me. Sorry I am sounding so stupid. I am about to worry myself crazy here wondering if I am doing all things right. I dont think I could handle another surgery for this. Bless you in your dedication to you pup. You are a great mom!!

You aren't sounding stupid! You are sounding as sad, frustrated and lost as I am/was a month or so ago! And wanting to do nothing but the right thing.
I personally would ask for acepromazine. It is a sedaive. My dog can take more than most horses and still be wanting to play. Add that to tramadol. fentanyl and gabafentin and she is decently sedate. I quit having people over after the second surgery. She just has too hard a time holding still. Maybe I am lucky to have another older now quieter dog to keep her company. Might have been a huge bonus, I don't know. Do everything you can to kepp your dog as quiet as possible! I am so scared of anything else! By my own bad experience |
