An email I got today

Was wondering what you guys thought about this email

#AOLMsgPart_2_04925415-377f-4e02-9609-002bc0830b0d .hmmessage P{margin:0px;padding:0px}#AOLMsgPart_2_04925415-377f-4e02-9609-002bc0830b0d body.hmmessage{font-size: 10pt;font-family:Verdana}Hi and thank you for helping homeless animals.

I have been involved as a volunteer with open admission shelters and rescue groups for 10 years.

Your ad on IDR+ says that Goofy came from a "kill shelter." This sort of characterization causes dissention among the people who work and volunteer at open admission shelters. If you choose to put your energies into a limited admission group, I applaud your efforts to help homeless pets. But let's keep the goals that we share in mind and try not to attack each other.

honestly - i don't know how i'd take it. a high kill shelter is still trying to do good by adopting out animals, but on the other hand they are putting perfectly healthy animals to sleep. I wouldn't think putting 'so-and-so came from a high kill shelter' would be a huge attack against another shelter - I wish more high kill shelters would work with other rescues to save more pets.

MY RESPONSE

Hi Marlene,
I typically concentrate my efforts on the Doberman breed. When I went up to this "shelter" to pull a Doberman, I saw Goofy. What I saw was a wonderful big dog with an even better personality. So home with me he came.
I respect and understand what you do, but the plain truth is this shelter is a very high kill. My personal thoughts are the public needs to beaware of the situations so may dogs are put into due to poor ownership.
It was almost a year ago from the same shelter I pulled a 7 year old Bull Mastiff who I found to be pregnant and heartworm positive. After almost 2000.00, I lost both her and her puppy. I am still not over that emotional experience. I had to endure that pain because some IDIOT let that dog get heartworms and pregnant at age 7.
I do everything I can for that shelter, but its simply overwhelming. I went today with a large food and blanket donation.
So, I am sorry to offend you, and i hope we both continue to do what we do to save these animals.
Sincerely,
Traci Williams

EXACTLY, she has time to surf PetFinder, and look for posting that have the words HIGH KILL SHELTER in them???

Bottom line is we are both trying to do what we can for these animals.

Yes, you both are, however, she should be happy you rescued Goofy from death row instead of attacking you

Our shelter has gotten VERY defensive and asked us not to put that we saved a dog from being pts at a shelter even if it's true. I don't know why they care. It's one less dog they have to worry about.

Our sweet little pittie Lindsay is a perfect example. She had 2 small ring worm spots so they were going to put her down over it instead of maybe one of the dog aggresive onery dogs out in the kennels. We didn't say which shelter either and we work with many!!

It's fact of shelter life and if they don't want it advertised, they shouldn't do it!!!

You know where the delete button is! You were much nicer to this unsolicited email than I would have been.

ps... I don't put those exact words on profiles any longer

The shelter I used to work and volunteer at also was very very temperamental about my speaking the truth when I called them a "kill shelter." Because I would not lie to the public or stand for the illegal things they were doing eventually led to my termination. Shelters like that do NO good for the animals. None at all.

Your reply was very appropriate.
