flea shot???

i asked my coworker the other day what she was doing about flea control for her cairn terrier. she insisted he got a shot to prevent fleas. she then asked me why would i be worried about flea control since i'm not planning on taking my dog into the woods. i tried to explain to her that fleas don't just live in the woods. and just in case, i asked my vet about a 'flea shot" he laughed at me!!

That is absoultely ridiculous. There is no such thing. Only topical, oral meds, and shampoos will help with fleas. You should help educate her!

i tried to explain....
she also fed her dog as a puppy 1 time a day 1 dixie cup of generic kibble. and only lets him have water with meals (so he doesnt pee so much)
Everything ive read online about feeding says 3-4 small meals as a puppy up till about 6 months then you can go to 2 meals a day, also have plenty of fresh water available. she criticizes me cause my dog has to go out alot, but i live in a very dry house 16oz of water evaporates w/in 12 - 16 hours. so there is no way i could possibly leave my dog w/out water in my house ever.
some of the things she says and does make me want to bang my head on the wall untill my ears bleed!!!

What if you find information online and print it for her to proove (sp? -- it looks wrong to me) that what you are doing is the correct way?

I havent heard of a flea shot either and i dont think there is one but that definitly isnt a bad idea. Someone should develop that if possible.

Interesting.. it depends on what is in the topical ointment. I'm not sure systemically it would work. Also, vaccines are made of bacteria (killed and modified-live).. I don't think you use bacteria to get rid of the fleas. And the only other injection made for parasite was the heartworm preventative, and now that's taken off the market.

Who knows though.. medicine never ceases to amaze me.

her way is the only way, cause thats how it is!!!
she also bought a pet store puppy, who had testicular cancer. i know even though all puppies deserve a chance, and you can even get a 'bad' dog from a reputable breeder, i printed off all the cons of pet store dogs, and she ignored me, and told me i was stupid for doing all the research i did, and spending so much on my dog.
she did no research on her breed (cairn)and doesnt understand why he barks at every thing and why he's so rambunctious(terrier!!!!). at least i knew that my dog is going to be stubborn, willful, prey oriented, and try to attempt to dig up my entire backyard, along with the possible plethora of health issues that westies are prone to.
she also told me i was wasting my time teaching the dog tricks before he was potty trained. "why are you teaching him to sit instead of concentrating on potty training?" are her exact words.
my dog has a little issue w/ dominance(westie style) and we were told by the vet and a trainer to make sure that he knows the 'nothing in life is free' policy so therefore, SIT was the first thing my puppy was taught. from research, i know that a male westie can take quite a while to be housebroken, possibly not until hes 7 months old, so that will come in time, i couldnt wait that long to establish who the boss in the house is!!

My ollie is from a pet store.. although i know (especially with my background) pet stores aren't the best place to get a dog. I don't know about in your area, but here pet stores are actually more expensive then breeders for some of their puppies. I paid 500$ for my sheltie.. which if I would have found a breeder i could have easily paid around 300. But, pet store purchases are usually impulsive, which is why they get away with charging so much. Ollie came with a handful of problems.. had been treated for giardia, been treated for an upper respiratory infection, had a subcutaneous mass from a vaccination, he had been ENTIRELY over vaccinated, then during my wellness exam with my vet we found a suture on his belly (most likely from an umbilical hernia), then he broke his leg, and then 3 weeks into it he came up with roundworms. So I can testify FIRST hand why pet store purchases aren't smart. I now like to refer to Ollie as my "Pet Store Rescue"... at least I know how to care for a dog and have the access to good health care etc. Which is a reason why I'm not so bothered by all of his problems. Better than some ignorant people who buy puppies and then freak out when they grow? Or do what your describing of your friend. I guess it's a lost battle with your friend.. at least your educated and won't make the same mistakes.

just slap her! haha--I'm just kidding. People like that are HARD to convince otherwise....When I was teaching classes..I actually had a few men get refunds on orientation day b/c they didnt agree with positive reinenforcement methods that I used...and it seemed like EVERYTHING I said was wrong to them. Maybe it was their pride....they didnt want a 21 year old girl telling them how to train their dog! MEN!?!?!

Not to change the subject.. but how much does PetsMart charge for obedience classes? I have opinions about classes, but if they are reasonable I would do it.
