Interesting statistics on OFA

This is the breed rankings on occurance for hip dysplasia. I found this chart very interesting.
The dates of this chart is Jan 1974 to December 2007.

Silly, everyone KNOWS (because they always tell me...) that GSDs are the WORST for CHD. Shows you what OFA knows! LOL

"Hybrid" coming in at number 30, with 20% affected.

Exactly! That is what I found so odd. I know the breed for years has been working hard to make sure only 'normal' dogs are bred. I guess its paying off.

yeah but you cant tell mixed breed breeders that their cross breeds can also have purebred problems lol, why that would kill part of their whole sales pitch.

Plus doesn't this just cover tested dogs? GSD'S are very over bred and lots aren't tested.

thats the point BC. Proper breeder test and eliminate non passing hips from the breeding program and they are the one the statistics show and the proof that it is working. The back yard breeders and money hungry bad breeders are not testing so they re not in the statistics and all you have to do is look at gsd rescues and how many of those bad bred gsds are on forums and in rescues all needing hip replacements. I am not saying a well bred tested litter will not have the issue. Maddy had hip and elbow but she was a nuerotic pacer as well. Most pet gsd people I know still have their gsd hips tested anyhow so that they are aware of the dogs future and how much to upplement thier diet for hip health and what activites are safe for them. Hanging out with tenough gsds both poor bred and well bred with many owners and comparing notes you learn it does make a difference.

I popped over to check the statistics for Cavaliers, and OFA says that 97% of those tested are normal. It would be much more interesting if the owners/breeders would send in the positive results so people can see at what age the Cavaliers are developing MVD. You know the vast majority of them are developing the disease, but not at what age. At this time I guess the dog developed a murmur at the age after the last posted exam, if it's over a year old.

The more dogs tested, the more the results with differ. I mean Bulldogs and Pugs are at the top with less than 450 OFA tests, so those results will be slanted... I mean if you have a dog that only 10 dogs are tested and 7 of those dogs come back with HD, that's 70% right there... out of 100 - maybe those are the only 7 that have HD. Now for LARGE breeds, I find it quite interesting... but that also gets me, only 5300 Pyrs have been tested, to me that seems like a small number for 33 years of records.

Agreed and several degenerative conditions the symptons do not occur for years. By then the dog is breed. Some conditions you can see at a earlier age in tests. If its present the dog should not be bred. However- you are right- MVD is harder to detect at a younger age. If more breeders posted follow up testing in the lines, showing that it showed up later in life, it would help the future generations know more if its its possibly present in the lines.
I did find the charts highly interesting for sure.
