How bad is it for an adult dog to have his dew claw removed? I need to get Hudson in to remove his. It keeps getting pulled and infected and it stickes out sidways from his leg so it keeps catching. Then he licks his leg raw to make it feel better...only making it worse. So I wrap the leg to stop the claw from catching on stuff but then he chews the wrapping
![]() So the solution I have come up with is to remove the claw all together, but have not had the chance or money to get him in to talk to the vet about somthing that is not an immediate emergency. So has anyone done this on an adult dog....will it be the same for him as when we removed his claw on the nub? I am just worried because this dog only has one good front leg and to do surgery on that one good leg worries me...will it effect the way he bares his weight on his legs? Any ideas, thoughts, opinions, experiances would be greatful. |

I had to have both front dew claws removed from a yellow lab bitch that I rescued. She would rip her face up rubbing her face when she was crated. She was fine right after, she could walk, do normal things. The only thing I wish the vet would have explained is that because the roots of the nail bed are so deep, it takes a long while for the spots to heal. But we kept them wrapped for a few weeks and tried to keep her from chewing the wrap, then after that I took the wrap off and let her keep it clean.
Your boy should be fine. He won't have any down time after, because the dew claw is so high up on the foot/leg. Good luck. |

Once,taken out,it doesn't really hurt them,anymore!.'
It might just be unconfortable and he will want to lick the place!.Make sure that he wears an elizabethan collar when you are not around!. |

Cool thanks,.,.I was more worried about how the walking this would work because of the lack of the whole no two from feet thing...

i'm sorry, i don't know the dog. is he missing a front leg, did you say??
for me >>> anything under anaesthetic is dangerous, just for that. but anaesthesia has come a long way over the years. when they did colt's hips(for his ofa) they just brought him back into the exam, the fellow (technician I think that he was) helped me to do his tatoo as hes' imported and needed my tatoo on him >>> and then he was back up within a few minutes, i'd say less than half an hour. so it has really come along way, the anaesthetics that they can use now. I've never had dew claws taken off, either. I've seen it done on a litter of springers that the girl had left it too old to do them, and what a mess!! and the mother was freaking out >>> she had to call me at work to come and help her as the mother wouldn't let her back into the pups to clean the room up. so i believe you that there must be quite a root there, and from the look of that room that night, >>> a lot of vasculation as well.! |
