Canine Incontinence Caused by Medications

Our six year old golden doodle was misdiagnosed with a skin bacterial infection on 1/6/09. Our vet prescribed Keflex and Prednisolone. After being compliant for two weeks I noticed that the skin condition was not significantly improving so we returned to the vet. This time the vet decided that it was a yeast conditions and stopped the Prednislone and started Ketoconaozole with alternating weeks of medicated baths and Malesab wipes.

During the Prednisolone we noticed and increase of appetite, more water drinking and some tiredness, otherwise no adverse indicators.

On 2/5 we noticed that our dog had wet fur and found that she has left a puddle of urine on the floor. After this happened a second time we took her the the emergency vet where Clavomox was added for a possible urinary tract infection. There was no reoccurance of incontinence until 2/8. Now we have gone 24 hour with a reoccurance.

Has anyone seen this kind of reaction to Predisolone or a combinations of the medications that I have listed?

I've seen incontinence with predisolone pretty often. Don't just cut the medicine cold turkey, though - that can cause some bad side effects. Talk to the vet about the best course of action.

The good news is that once the pred is out of the dog's system, things go back to normal in my experience. Might be different for others, for what it's worth.

My old girl is almost 16 years old. About two years ago she had a light infection on the inside of her leg. I cannot remember what the vet gave her but within two days she was incontinent. We took her back to the vet and was told that incontinece comes on very quickly in older dogs. I questioned it and took the meds away. (No, it was not Prednisolone). After stopping the meds she has never been incontinent again. Sometimes it does have to do with the meds your dog is taking.

Louise had incontinence from being given Percorten (DOCP). It lasted for 28 days, as long as the injection lasts for.

I don't think steroids normally cause urinary incontinence.. but it can cause increased urination. Which can lead to a couple of things -- UTI, dribbling, etc.
