Dog with Diabetes

My old supervisor at work just got back to work after finding out his dog has diabetes. He has a welsh corgi and used to feed her table scraps and all kinds of food and from what i've heard from coworkers.. she is extremely fat.

Well now they have her on insulin and w/d food. She needs to loose 10 pounds. His vet said to feed her carrots and green beans. He was trying to find out if carrots had sugar. We were thinking cooked carrots contain sugar and raw carrots would be fine but i told him id ask you guys and double check. He was also told no treats like milkbones, beggin strips.. stuff like that. Now if i recommend a good healthy treat compared to those.. would they be ok with a dog with diabetes?

Thanks!

if the carrots and beans are frozen she wont get anything from them they will more or less pass through her but still make her feel full...its how we got weight off of my once overweight beagle...dogs cant break then down unless the cell walls are broken which only happens when cooked and pureed...sp?

I am going to say green beans are higher in sugar than carrots. What about sweet pototoe? Or broccoli?

Are you pretty sure about that?? Tell me more???

Not doubting you, It is just that it sounds like such a good idea.
Because dogs do like frozen greenbeans.

Arrow Rat Terrier with Diabetes

I don't have an answer to your question regarding green beans and carrots, but i did have a dog with diabetes. I had a Rat Terrier, Suzzette, who had diabetes. She was diagnosed when she was about 3 years old. I gave insulin shots daily (along with allergy shots). She would go into diabetic coma some times and i would have to give her karo syrup to bring her out of it. She became completely blind at the age of 5 due to glacoma caused by the diabetes. Suzzette lived until she was 8 years old when i had to make the decision to put her down. If you need more information or have any questions, i can go into greater detail of her care.
