Topical flea treatments
I am sure this topic has been here before, but let's go one more round.
I am restocking all flea treatments, and there are so many I have got myself flustered. What do you all use and why? We are overwhelmed here with ticks, so I have to have one that includes them. But they have the original kinds and plus. What is the difference? I know the price is one BIG difference. Help? Also, for the groomers, I am getting some new supplies and I need a good undercoat rake. Any suggestions? Apollo's hair is getting out of control and I need a good one. I have also found another black spot on his shoulder, crazy pup! |

I'm in Canada so we don't get Frontline, but I'm pretty sure it's very common. The only flea AND tick treatment here is Advantix, which I used once on my dogs, and years later made the connection between it and a seizure in Hades. We can't use it now anyways because there's a chemical (fipronil I think?) that's toxic to cats so it's not to be used in households with dogs and cats.

Well we use frontline. I used the one for ticks with Hottie but only because with his condition if he got lyme disease you would not see it until it was too late .
With the frontline for ticks you apply monthly. You can use the plus but really I have found the ( regular) to work as well. We have more ticks here than we did on the mountain. Probably because its not as cold .. My vet likes the advantix stuff but I have to be careful what I use on Femka and only stay with the " tried and true" with her. |

Frontline is what I want to get. I think the only difference in the plus is it kills flea eggs also. But for the price difference I think I will just get the original. It has always worked in the past. I have tried Advantix too, but if I remember correctly it didn't work as well. I think I just try to make things harder than they are.

We don't have a tick problem so I use Advantage. Shop online, I've found fantastic prices for 12 packs that way for Frontline plus or Advantage vs local purchase!
I have put Frontline plus on the 2 dogs that came into rescue with a tick I saw though. |

The Plus controls fleas for 3 months. Ticks are only for one month, so if you have ticks you need to apply monthly.

Thanks.. I knew it was something like that. I do not use the plus and the last time I did was the year before last because Hottie died before we would have started him on the plus. ( march and had been a cold winter).
