Could my maltese be sick?

Hi all,

I have a 3 year old maltese female. She was potty trained using potty pads and hasn't had an accident in over two years. Within the last few days I noticed she has been peeing on our carpet. I haven't seen her do it, but I stepped in it one day and noticed there were a few spots there. I have been changing her pad regularly thinking maybe she thinks it's too full or something, but she even did it when the pad was empty. We were out of town for a week on vacation and my in laws came and stayed with her. I was wondering if maybe she was mad because we were gone, but you'd think she'd stop now that we're home. She's also in heat right now so maybe that has something to do with it, although she's never done that before. She doesn't act like she's sick and she's eating and drinking like normal so I'm not sure what to do.

She could have a urinary tract infection. I would take her to the vet just to be sure.
