Lady the GSD

Lady is the German Shepard I was "co-fostering" for a friend on the weekends. She is a nice dog, but needs alot of work. Sadly she has been placed and returned twice. I will probably start taking her again and trying to work with her.
These pictures are from Christmas, she spent it here with us.

What was the return reasons? If it's just manners and training, can you do that?
When we're unable to, we will enlist a training facility here for $150 for a week of board and train. We've used them twice now and it was a great success!!!

Lady the German Shepard

First home I am embarassed to say was s friend of mine from work. She has a male GSD, and he has some issues, but for the most part they are under control. I thought she would be able to handle her. Lady got out of the yard and bit a neighbor, did not break skin, but did in fact bite. She was picked up by animal control, the whole 9 yards.

Lady is a very fearful dog, she is only about 18 months, and has never had the proper training or socialization for a young GSD. When she is here I have no issues with her, at her foster home she shows no issues, but we have discovered with less confident people her issues show.

Second home, similiar story. It was a man and his teenage son. They have a wild lab for her to play with. This home sounded good, the guy was aware of her issues, and wanted to work with her issues. Only a few weeks into the adoption he discovered he was going to have to undergo back surgery. So with his injury he would be unable to devote the time to she would need.

Lady is NOT a bad dog, just needs a playmate and a very confident, no nonsens type owner.

I can relate. Many of our rescues need owners such as that. They are always offended when I say they're "too nice" and should be more confident and firm or it won't work. That's how Berkely came back after 4 days!

Problem 1 was me not seeing what they saw while in my care
Problem 2 I don't take any nonsense from dogs so I'm not usually given a chance to see it from them.

I think I'm going to add a question in my application:

Do you expect the dog you're interested in adopting to be full on trained in every aspect? If so, this is probably not the dog for you!

Granted there are some great ones but they come in all ages and backgrounds so they always have something for us to work on and it needs to continue in the new home...

Lady will be fine. All lessons learned to her journey to a great home for her!

I, personally would place her in an experienced home and also one that has areas secure to hold her when nessecary with gsd experience only. I would not try placeing this dog in a pet home again.
