Just brought home an eight week old female lab. Bought her from a very good breeder.
I guess her behavior is normal, but for me it is painful.
When you go to pet her, she clamps on to your finger, your hand or your trousers and will not let go. Her needle teeth sometimes breaks the skin. I'll try to lay down and cuddle with her and she will jump on me and bite my nose.
Any suggestions?
Also when she is finished drinking water, she will try to carry the bowl with the water in it or turn over the bowl.

Sounds like you've got yourself a 'hunting' dog! I would start puppy training classes (obedience) as soon as possible.

As far as for the biting try a product called Bitter Apple. It has a repusive smell and taste. Once the pup tastes and smells it, the pup should want to stay away from anything with the smell. Please correct her for her biting behavior. Yelp at her when she bites. That is how her littermates let her know she is playing too rough.

Labs are fun. Enjoy her while she is little

Hi there, I breed labradors, so I know what you are going through. The worst thing you can do is lay down on the floor, it puts you in the submissive position and the pup on TOP.
You need to reprimand the pup every time it goes to put anything you don't want it to in its mouth. (including your nose, I have had this happen too with my very first Lab). It is absolutely normal behaviour but you need to teach that it is not o.k. to even play nip you!!
If pup goes to nip, immediately stop playing or petting, place pup on her own for 5 or so minutes and YELL NO, clap your hands too, to frighten her.
The carrying of the bowl, hence the name Labrador Retreiver, and that is what they do, with anything, try putting down a heavier bowl she can't pick up, also they will splash in their water given half the chance. I provide 2 containers, large one for splashing, and wire around big buckets for drinking, so they don't knock it over. Good Luck, any more questions just ask.

im having the same problem with my 6 wk old pup. i have tried the bitter apple and it dont even faze her. she acts like she likes it. i have sprayed it on the walls because she likes to chew on the walls and peel the wall paper off (something my other 2 started). I gave her chew toys, she plays with those and goes straight back to the walls. We also have the problem of her biting us in the face and fingers and toes... My grandmother made me some multi colored booties Precious (my puppy) LOVES to chase me around the house when i have those booties on. I need to do something bout her nipping because i have a 1 1/2 and a 2 1/2 yr old little girls. I cant let the dog be nipping them. I have tried the leave the dog alone, i have tried to put her in the bathroom if she starts nipping, i have yelled at her i have clapped my hands and i say OUUUUUUUCH when she does start nipping... My dog is a chocolate lab/heeler mix... would you have any information that will help me train her NOT to nip? I think she has done pretty good today, she hasnt nipped as much as she usually does, but i know the problem is far from being over.

Hi Carrie,
sounds like you need to be a little more gruff with her, you really have to make a BIG point about it, if you are walking and she is chasing, nipping, stop, pick her up if she is not too heavy yet!! and YELLLL NO, NO, NO, plonk her outside, or in bathroom, brusquely, not to hurt, but to make the point. Leave her there, for 5 mins. she will soon get the hang of it.
Try using some treats, get her to come to you, make her sit and give a treat if she doesn't snatch or nip at you, and praise, if she nips do as above. Do this asap if you have small children, you need to stop jumping up too, do it the same way, basic obedience training really.

We have a Great Dane puppy that is 9 months old. He is getting out of the stage but it lasts for awhile. It REALLY does help to take them to puppy obedience. Even if you just go to one set of classes & thats it. With our busy schedule that is all that we were able to go to so far. Now, I have the know how on teaching Vader commands. Your pup is still very young & you have a long teething journey ahead of you. They usually on cost about $80 or so for a 6 week period. Well worth the money & FUN too! Good luck with your baby!
