Itchy after spay **pics added**

Since Roxy got spayed yesterday, she seems to be very irritated and its not pain. It started when she woke up this morning, she got up to walk and freaked and tried to lick and scratch around her wound but not the wound itself. It seems to be in the "armpit" of her back legs right where the shaved area stops. Now she does have dried blood around the actual wound that i thought could be bothering her and she also has some in the hair on the inside of her back legs and i've gotten most of that off but she is still so irritated and i just don't know what to do for her. I don't know if its just because its shaved and its irritating her.. i need some advise.

Should i give her some Benadryl? is there any lotions i could put on her? Is it ok to be giving her a bath this soon after surgery? I'd like to get that excess dry blood from her wound somehow and maybe that would wash away what ever is bothering her if is something on her .

No on the bath. Though you can wipe around it with water. Just don't get the incision wet.

Put some Zinc Ointment on the area...this will help the incishion heal as well as take the itch away....

It is kind of thick so you will have to gop it on, and you may need to use an Elizabithan Coller on her to stop on her to stop her as well!!

p.s. Zinc Ointment is diper rash cream!!

I'm willing to bet money on it being razor burn.

I would go with a benadryl and a cortaid cream. Plus I would put a tee shirt on her so she will avoid the scratching or licking.

i tried wiping it with water but there are some thicker spots and its hard to rub them off and be careful at the same time.

i'll see if we have zinc ointment laying around to try. I bought one of those blue blow up collars.. i think its called the procollar..? its working for her but obviously not taking the itch away and otherwise if she wasn't so irritated she could care less about the wound itself. She hasn't even tried to lick that. When she tries to use her back feet to scratch she can't reach and she just scratches air.

I was thinking razor burn or something like that the way it seems to bother her but nothing seems to be red or irritated. I can get a picture later today and post it up.

I gave her a baby asprin last night before bed and i have it incase she needs it. is it ok to give benadryl and baby asprin at the same time if i needed to?

Don't let her lick the area. B'asia got an infection in her incision from licking it. Use an Elizabethan collar if you must, but don't let her lick around it.

To clean the area (NOT the incision), use a cool, damp cloth and pat, don't wipe, the area. Make her position such that if the water leaks from the cloth, gravity takes it away from the incision. Then turn her over and do the other side.

I would not give aspirin, but Benedryl should be fine if she's not taking anything else. Most likely, the itching is bothering her more than the pain, and the pain serves to keep her calm and still.

With all 3 of my females, I slept with their leash around my wrist so I would know when they were stirring. I did that for about 4 nights after spay.

If you put ointment on her make sure she can't lick it off.

Ya i tried patting the area but she seemed irritated at me for doing it like it was hurting her so i just said fine and left it be. I haven't given her any more asprin since last night. The pain doesn't seem to be a factor. I gave it to her thinking the pain killers from the vets were wearing off and she might need it through the night. I don't have any ointment so i'll have to go out and get some as well as benadryl.

I did put a tshirt on her and she wears the collar thingy if she starts to get antsy or when she's sleeping at night. she's really just been laying around and sleeping and only really tries to lick when she gets that itchy feeling.

here are some pictures of the wound. she tries to lick the shaved part around the wound close to where the hair is.

(i uploaded them and took the large size image so you can see for possible razor burn or irritation. i just can't see anything.)

and here are pics with her tshirt.. she's never had one on before and she really didn't mind it. she did get up and try to walk and got a little irritated and tried to turn around and lick it but the tshirt was in the way and she just kind of gave up

Oh, bless her heart. She's beautiful!

Her incision looks perfect to me. If you can just deal with it and wait it out, I'm sure she'll do fine. The Benedryl might relieve her itching some. But this is just a difficult time to get through. Keep telling yourself that it's only temporary. That's how I got through.
