Experiences with Pano

OK I was at the vet for routine vaccinations and Indi still limps on and off.

The vet that saw her today said Pano based on multiple things she did to the leg.
"If it was OCD, this would hurt" NOPE
"If it was soft tissue, this would hurt" NOPE

But she was uncomfortable(just a bit) on the long bone.

So reading it says to treat with antiinflammatory or pain meds but just to wait it out. Less exercise hasn't been know to help it one way or the other.

She seems fine until she runs around a bit.

Edit: OK oops, I was completely off on my letters. OCD is the lab injury I was referring to"

So, some experiences with it or more info. Is it OK to let her just be her and work her and treat her when she is sore. Is agility too much for her?

She doesn't act sore even when she is running. She is on Canidae whis is 24% protein. I did mix a 5 lb grain free in with the last bag but I can't believe that one 5 lb bag protein would be enough to cause it...but then again, what do I know. LOL

So fellow PDGer's, load me with knowledge

I don't know much (anything) about pano and I must have missed your posts about Indi limping but Harvey is also have problems with limping and he's being x-rayed in the next couple of weeks.

The thing is with labs they tend not to show that they're in pain. Even when Harvey couldn't put much weight on his leg he didn't show pain! Based on what the vet did to Harvey's leg she couldn't find anything wrong - lol

Which leg is she limping with? When does it happen? What happens? I've never heard of CRD - what is that?

It her her front left leg. She came in limping about 6 weeks ago. I have gone through rest, meds, a therapy specialist.

No one, like Harvey, can find where the sore point is.

OCD(if I have the initials right) is a shoulder injury pretty common in labs. But fi you can flex he leg forward and back, then they most likely don't have the OCD as it is extrememly painful.

The vet I saw today had a shepherd with it until it was 3. She said it just has to run its course.

Reid had limping that the vet kept saying was just a "pulled muscle" or "growth pains" at about 10 months old. I didn't trust this opinion, so I sought out a second opinion. To make a long story short, we ended up in surgery...

...to remove this off of his shoulder, which was concealing a nasty blood blister on the bone.... the source of his mystery limping.

When we adopted Yancey, it was estimate that he was around 1 year of age. Within 2 or 3 weeks of having him, I noticed a slight limp in his right front leg. There did not seem to be any tenderness and his paw pads seemed fine. Sometimes he would limp and sometimes not. After a few days, I took him to the vet, they couldn't find anything wrong, gave us an anti inflammatory drug and the limp went away. A few weeks after the meds, the limp was back. Back to the vet and we saw a different dr. this time and he said it was a mild case of Pano. Another round of anti inflammatory was prescribed. He said if it didn't work or if the limp returned again, we would do x-rays. However, the meds worked and I have not noticed it since.

I do remember that it first started when we increased his walks to 3 miles in the am and 3 in pm. It was always more noticeable after a long walk or after a run at the park.

I found this website for your agility - http://www.2ndchance.info/limping.htm it says if it is Pano then grabbing the affected leg will make the dog show pain. It also says Pano shifts from one leg to another.

I've got more stuff to share with you about how Harvey is/was (we can compare notes ) but I'm at work so I'll pop back on later!

It does say for Pano that it you pinch the long bone is when it will hurt, At least what I have read.

To be honest, I am not sold on the idea that it is Pano anyway. But part of me wants to think so because at least someone has given me something. So far no one has seem to be able to find the pain, but everyone can see the limp.

Yes we do need to compare notes. How starnge that two labs so close in age are going thorugh something similar on opposite sides of the country.

How old is Indi?

My mom's GSD suffered from panosteitis as a young dog. But typically dogs grow out of it by about 2 years old.

I wouldn't recommend pushing physical activity, but making them cage rest isn't going to help anything either.

When my mom's dog had it, we treated it with Deramaxx on an as needed basis. He would take one when he was non-weight bearing, which was about 1-2/week for several weeks.

His also would transfer from leg to leg.. sometimes front leg, sometimes rear leg.

Two fox red young labs with some of the same dogs in their pedigree (albeit quite a few generations back!) having similar issues with the same leg - how spooky is that!

In my experience, Pano can be touchy. For instance, my husband's GSD Faust had BAD Pano. Fever, pain, all that. We switched him off his food (Canidae) and put him on raw (chicken and Turkey) and it went away within a week. BUT- at one point my daughter gave him a kibble-type treat for going in his crate, and the next day he was limping again. Edited to add, the dog was on raw food for close to 4 months before it cleared. Previous attempts to switch back to kibble resulted in an increase in pain and limping...

So, food can have a HUGE impact on Pano dogs, especially the bad ones.

They can x-ray- it takes a good machine and sometimes you still cannot see the lesions, but some of them can be seen. When we get GSDs limping, we x-ray the "possible" issues, i.e. Elbows, OCD lesions, etc, then when we can't find another reason for the lameness we assume and hope it is Pano. If it hops from one leg to another, we know it is. :-)

Good luck. I've had the best experience limiting the grain and reducing the fat in the diet.
