Buddy's Meds and Stupid Vet Office

I swear I have no luck with vets I went to our vet Monday to get Lola's nails clipped and to pick up the letter of release for Buddy to start his classes for the Pet Assisted Therapy Program, all that was fine. When I picked up Buddy's Phenobarbitol for next month, the receptionist asked me which dosage I wanted? Huh? I say......Apparently, they gave us 15 mg pills last month when he was supposed to be on 30 mg's. He has never been on 15 mgs so I don't know how they got this wrong. He did had a mild seizure a few weeks ago I mentioned this to them and right away they brought the doc out to speak to me, I was pretty upset. Buddy had been acting a bit mooshy, not happy the last few weeks, we thought it was the heat, it is getting very very hot and humid again. He has been on the right meds now since Monday, twice a day and he has perked up, he seems happy, he wants to play, he teases Lola, etc. I am wondering if while he was on the lower dosage, if he was on the verge of having seizures and that is why he was not himself? Could being put on the correct dosage make a difference so quickly?

You bet it can. Try giving someone with epilepsy half the dosages that they normally get and see what happens. Give a diabetic half the amount of insulin they are supposed to be receiving and see what happens. A person that is on dialisis (sp?)...tell them your are going to cut their treatment in half and see what happens. When someone is having a heart attack, only give them half the amount of nitro they are supposed to get...and again, see what happens.

I would NOT be a happy camper with the vets hired "help."

I would absolutely think the dosage change could make a noticeable difference in a short time. Sorry about this. I would be very upset as well. I am glad Buddy is back on his correct dosage and is showing signs of antagonizing Lola!! LOL.

They kept trying to convince me it would not have made a big difference...until I told them he had a seizure. I am not happy with that office. I am just glad my little Buddy is feeling himself again and he is happy.

They don't want to get sued so they will never admit a wrong even when it's clear as day. They simply don't care. You already paid them and that's all they care about. I'm sorry for being so harsh but I have very little faith that most vets truly care. They have become more and more like doctors and most (not all) will spend less then a minute with the dog. The rest is spent waiting or with the nurse. Sorry for the rant.

I am glad he is feeling better. I know you're in SF (I HATE this weather that we had lately). YUCK! If you're close to margate you can try our animal hospital. They're a small office and have done good work (cheaper then most) and they pay more attention then regular offices.

Thanks, I think the problem is this office is so busy. The vet has a very good reputation and has been recommended by many. I am not sure I am going to leave just yet, we just switched to him last year. He is Plantation, not too far from Margate.

I use to live in Plantation and recently moved back to Margate. We take all our babies (dog, cat and my parrots). I acctually like the fact that they are smaller. It's Margate Animal Hospital in case you decide you have had enough.

Busy or not the office made a BIG mistake.....what's next?

Consider this a learning tool and next time be on them like white on rice. A darn shame it has to be this way. Believe me, you are not alone in this matter.
