Bad Bad Bad Day! Poor Dodger:( UPDATE Post#7

My little dog scared me to death last night and got super close to being dead himself.

He was romping in the yard and my brother and some neighbor boys were playing baseball(Note: This is not a common thing, it's once in a blue moon that they play BB). Naturally being the JRT he is, he wanted to play too. He was running circles around where they were playing, running after stray balls. One boy pitched to my brother, the brother hit it low and there was my baby dog's head.I thought they were paying better attention but this was a total freak accident

The yelp he made was absolutely unforgettable and I stood there frozen. I just knew he was dead. I just started shaking and I couldn't bring myself to walk over there. My mom had ran to him, she yelled to get a towel. I got up there and there was blood everywhere.

Thank god he hit his muzzle and not his little head. He broke his tooth, bit his tongue, and spilt his cheek but luckily that was it.

We did a little neuro exam, made him walk, follow hand movement. Took him in the house and tried to get a little ice pack on him. He ate a piece of turkey, cheese, and his whole dinner. Never puked. He stopped bleeding from his mouth fairly quick but his cheek bled for a while. He bounced back real quick though, chasing shadows(perfectly normal for him), tail wagging, running around the house.

He was fine last night, we were prepared to take him to the vet(5 minutes away) if anything had changed. Today he is fine, it's been almost 24 hours, he's a bit under the weather. Gave him a bit of aspirin, yes we followed directions and gave him the most minimal doage possible(5-10mg per lb. He's 18lbs and only got 80mg) His mouth is swollen and touchy but he is eating fine and eagerly. He likes being "sick', he got to eat all kinds of things today.

Here's his poor mouth. He had to go out and potty, so I took the pics outside where his eyes wouldn't be funny from the flash.

he should still see a vet he could easily have a jaw fracture which even if slight can cause a ton of issues and for the tooth you have to be sure no roots are exposed and that theres not like a pocket of some sort where stuff can get in and infected

I am glad he seems fine, but I think I might let the vet have a look anyway.

I can imagine how your heart dropped and glad he seems ok. I have to agree with everyone else here, he should be checked just in case, he is a little dog and that was a heavy hit to his jaw.

Thanks for everyone's opinions but remember "crying vet" each time something is posted is very discouraging and scares alot of people from posting at all. You have to try to somewhat trust that the owner knows best for their dog and they are there with him, not you. Just saying, I see it on alot of forums, people just don't even post because of other people's unwanted opinions, they are scared off.

That being said, as a responsible, sensible pet owner and one who knows her own dog Dodger DID go to the vet, he had x-rays(which were clean), he was put under and a back molar was removed(one which I didn't see until later on when the pain went down and we could look further.) He is also on an antibiotic for an infection he may have/or get.

Thanks for everyone's concern and sympathies

I was going to say for the mere fact of a fractured tooth, that requires veterinary attention. Even if the bleeding stopped, he seems neurologically "okay", and was eating/drinking/pooping/peeing okay.. that tooth needed to come out.

Glad everything is taken care of.
