Question Cortisone Shots

Okay some people have told me these shots can be very painfull...my vet also said she has to sedate Hudson to give him the shots....

Why are they so painful and will he be sore from these shots after he wakes up??

I just want to be prepared for tomorrow.

I hope you answer this thread

I'm just answering to tell you I don;t know- but my mother had cortisone shots in her foot for heel spurs and she said it was HORRIBLY painful.

I would IMAGINE it is not the ingredients, but is the location and WHERE the shot goes that make it painful- but I really don;t know.

My mom's had to have a set of cortisone shots twice. The reason they are painful is because it's a nerve stimulation shot as far as the dr told us.

Sorry to say, I had one in my heel once years ago and it hurt like heck!!!! OMG, I remember thinking, if childbirth is anything like this, I never want children!!!! If I remember correctly, it was as the medicine was injected, it burns. However, afterwards, I felt great, no more problem with my foot. I did not have any problems at all afterwards. So, yes it is going to hurt, but afterwards, Hudson is going to feel much better. It will be worth it in the end.

The reason that they are painful is that as a steroid they are designed to primarily work on inflammation. In many cases this means injecting into a joint as oppose to soft tissue. As one who use to receive them every 3 months for arthritis they were in the shoulder thus very little pain. But injected into my spine in 3 places it very painful. Joints have less soft tissue to absorb the prick of the needle and the injection reaches the joint faster. Steroids can have a heating feeling when injected into joints so initially can cause some discomfort before they start to work.

I had them 4 times in my joint between my thumb and pointer finger. They hurt like ow, ow , ow for about 10 min or less then numbness sets in and nothing. Its by far not unbarable, toothaches are worse , labour is worse , kidney stones are way worse, stubbing your toe real bad hurts worse.

My mom had one in her elbow last month, and her entire arm swelled up huge for a week and hurt more than the pain that they were trying to remedy.
