We already have a dog Loki and a cat Milo. We also dog sit Hooch during the week. My oldest sons friend was having to get rid of his pit bull because his parents are getting divorced. So we offered to take him, after a week they had to get the dog back because the father put it in the divorce papers that he would get possession of the pet.
So we were stuck with 3 little boys who were very upset about losing a pet and there was nothing we could do to stop it since it was court ordered.
We decided to start looking for another pet that looked similar, but knowing how pits can be treated, I was very nervous about getting a rescue, knowing how busy our home is and the amount of human kids that bounce though every weekend, playing, shouting, running, ect.
So after reading different adoption and rescue sites, (we can not afford to buy a pup from a breeder) we inquired about 1, but he already had found a home, then we went to visit Kanga at a shelter that is close to us. The listing said he would be submissive with a female and he got along good with kids.
When we got to the shelter, my heart went out to him, he was so terribly scared and after spending 30 minutes in the yard with him, he finally laid down and stopped pacing.
The lady at the shelter said she thought he was used as a bait dog, because they had never seen him be aggressive with another dog. She had to explain to me what a bait dog was, because I had never heard the term before. It broke my heart, and seeing his scars, I understood why he was so scared. He is also missing all this top teeth on the right side of his mouth
We took our dominant dog Loki up to the shelter 2 days later to introduce them, and see if we would be able to adopt Kanga. The meeting went great! Kanga tried to mount Loki only once, and when Loki barked at him, he went cowering off, and did not try to provoke her anymore. More importantly, he did not snap back at her!
I went and picked Kanga up the next day. I had to pick him up and place him in the car, he was so scared. The car ride home was horrible for him, his stomache was so upset, I had to pull over to clean up the back seat, and when I did he jumped out of the car and went cowering by a tree.
When we got home, he just cowered in a corner and slept in that same place. I slept downstairs on the couch close by him.
Now, he follows me everywhere! He loves all the kids coming and giving him pets and treats! We are teaching him how to play with a ball now and showing him that there are good things in life. He seems to have really reverted back to his puppy stage lol
He bounces around and rolls then smuggles and burries his head in my stomach. Its so cute! His eyes are becoming alive and happy!
I am so glad we rescued him! It has been a great experience. He is the exact type of dog our family needed, a fun playful loveable, and devoted bouncing Kanga.
