So today...

I went with a friend to the county pound. He has been searching for a dog since he bought his new house. We went to look at a small rat terrier mix. He didn't come home with him, he came home with Clover:

Clover is a 1.5 yr old Chow mix. She has done pretty good since she came home at 2:30. She went potty outside and he took her for a walk. I'm bringing him over some of our old stuff because he needed a few things. I bringing over a couple different training tools to see what she reacts to the best and what he feels most comfortable using. I am giving him the booklet that goes home with the dogs we have fostered. He is also getting a few of my other dog books.

I was surprised when he said he wanted to take her out. I thought he was looking for a small dog but I guess he has always liked chows. I asked him specific questions about their temperament just to make sure he liked more than looks. Personally I wouldn't have chosen her as she seemed more interested in sniffing things than the people in the room. She did seem to enjoy him petting her though. He tested to see how she was being handled and she didn't seem to mind it at all.

I am hoping this works out for him. I do think it was a good idea for him to get a dog. He returned from serving overseas back in September and has just seemed kind of lonely. He seems happy with her and keeps calling us asking questions. That makes me happy, that's he just wants to do things right.

When I go over tomorrow to let her out during the day I'll take pictures of her. Ones where you can see her better.

Just got back from visiting him and his new pup.

The first night was rough, a big shock as he hadn't owned a dog before. She chewed some stuff up and he wasn't sure he was ready. By the end of the day he had adjusted to her being there.

Today we got her a bunch of chews so she won't chew up stuff she isn't supposed to (mostly bully sticks and a kong). We gave him a crate we don't use anymore. After visiting her there today it is clear to me that she was loved and cared for by someone before being turned in as a stray. She doesn't jump, she seemed comfortable in the crate as if she had been trained to use a crate, and she is house trained (not a single accident since he adopted her on Thursday)

He changed her name to Weta (I think that's the spelling.). I guess it means blonde in Spanish as he is hispanic.

I worked with him and her for a bit. He felt most comfortable and she reacted the best to the prong collar for learning how to walk nicely on a leash. She stopped pulling after maybe only being corrected 3 times. She learned sit really quick and we're now working on give. The biggest problem that he has with her as far as training goes is she is so interested in sniffing everything.

She is extremely playful and loves playing fetch. He gave her a bath because she stunk (I have never adopted a dog from the pound that didn't...).

I have pictures on my cellphone but it won't send them to the comp. We let her out of her crate during the day while he's at work. He is taking her for a walk before work and when he gets home. She seems to like being near him as that's where she was when we came over tonight.

I think they're working out good. I'll try to find my camera to get pics of her when I go over tomorrow.
