Simmie has garbage gut! Boo hoo!

I'm mad. We just had a huge party at our house this past Saturday and I personally requested that no one feed our shelties people food. Well we had kids there . . . . need I say more? We had Honeybaked Ham, Meatballs and Sausage Spaghetti, cheese cubes and crackers, chocolate(!) and other items served.

Foxy is fine - but she stayed away from the kids. Simmie loved all the attention and at one point came over to me and burped. I smelled cheese. I had been watching (and hosting) and also had my parents watching. No one saw her being fed. Well the kids must have sneaked her food - what kind I don't know.

She can't keep anything down, is dry heaving, had diarhea and runs away at the site of food, (and she's a food hound). She's not dehydrated - I keep checking. She's drinking water but then vomits it.

I thought maybe an obstruction - but stuff comes out of both ends. I know I have to wait until 48 hours pass before a vet will do anything since garbage gut usually fixes itself. I can't even get any rice into her, although I'm going to try again tonight to give her about 1 tbsp of it. I'll boil a bit of hamburger if I can get her to eat even 1 grain of rice! I gave her a PeptoBismol but it wouldn't stay down.

Any suggestions? Or just wait out the next 24 hours? I'm a pro at getting their tummy back to normal but this waiting part (and refusing food) is new to me.

Deb

Peptobismo or kaeopectate will help the poor baby out. It should clear up both ends within 12 hours. I like pepto in pill form as it's easy to sneak in a little piece of food.

Give in same weight ratio as humans dosage.

Dax - she can't keep that down at all. She ran and hid outside when she saw me with something to eat. Her favorite thing in the world is cream cheese - we hide her allergy pills in a bit and she inhales it. Yesterday, she smelled the cream cheese (and pepto hidden in it) and backed away. I "encouraged" her to swallow it yesterday and it stayed in about 2 minutes. This morning I did another and forced it down and then massaged lightly her raw throat to get her to swallow it, and it came up within 60 seconds.

It's breaking my heart hearing her wretch like that. I thought Pepto would fix it up but it can't stay down long enough to do its job.

Awwww the poor girl i would suggest kaeopectate, that's what I always give to sammy and it usually passes within a day. If it doesn't improve, go to the vet, and they can usually give you a weeks dose of medicine that you give to your dog once or twice a day until the bottle is done. Hopefully you won't need to do that, but if so, that will surely make her better quickly.

Feel better!

Thanks for the advice - I think I'm going to go to Walgreens and get some Pepto liquid or kaopectate liquid and probably wear most of it later today . . . .

Foxy is even worried about Simmie. I'll post later.

It should pass in time - her stomach is very upset. If you get the liquid you can force it down -then keep her very calm and quiet for at least an hour (crate?) Give lots of plain water and let her stomach recover by offering very small meals (treat size) for a day or so. Poor baby.

When my dog has a severely upset stomach, I don't feed her a thing.
She has access to water, but that's it. No food, no treats, no nothing for 24 hours at least. Give her poor belly a chance to sort itself out without adding to the mess. Then try the rice, boiled chicken, plain oatmeal for a couple days, then think about hamburger and things of that nature.

I know, for me, taking medication on an empty stomach is worse than any upset stomach I might have gotten otherwise.

I do the same Lessica...it's the only way I can get Sidney's tummy back on track. If I don't with hold food for 24 hours, she just doesn't get over it. Then as you say, rice and boiled chicken in very small amounts at first. It's always worked so far.

Hi everyone,

The Kaopectate worked. I called it "liquid cookies". Got about 1/2 teaspoon down Simmie then took turns having her and Foxy licking more off 2 different fingers and it became a game. Then I sat on the floor with her for about 30 min and kept her quiet. She fell asleep. Gave her another 1/2 tsp a couple hours later then again before I went to bed.

She slept all night (finally!) and this morning actually did one of her jumps and seemed interested in Tom making his breakfast. I made her some rice and she ate 1 tablespoon of it, hesitantly. That stayed down so an hour later she had 1/8 cup of rice plus a few pieces of dog food since she was pawing at the food container. She's on the mend! Yay~! After 48 hours of heaving and no food, she's finally recovering.

Thanks for the kaopectate idea everyone. I chose that over the liquid pepto since pepto has saccharin an kaopectate has real sugar (sucrose) - figured sucrose might be easier on her tummy. I never read the ingredients on that stuff before.

Simmie thanks everyone for their excellent advice!
