heartgard

So I got blazes heart worm meds here. I never payed attention when I brought them home last month, they are heartgard, with ivermectin in it. I have always heard it is bad for collie type dogs to have this medicine. Should I be worried? Should I call and ask if I can return it and get a different brand? it is not open yet, as he doesnt start until June 1st, So I have time to return it.

I know a few dogs of different breeds that have reactions to ivermectin. Is this the first time giving Blaze something containing ivermectin? If your not sure, i'd rather be safe then sorry.

Where did you get it at? I would just let them know that your dog could have a reaction to ivermectin and you did not realize that it was in the heartguard and rather not take the risk and see if you can get a different brand that doesn't contain it.

Return them and get Interceptor. My shelties and border collie get Interceptor and not Heartgard or Tri-Heart, etc etc.

I would retured it. If it hasn't been open then they should take it back and let you get something else.

Even if it is open they should let you return it! It's their mistake to prescribe a medication contraindicated for your breed.

So I talked to the vet. She apoligized and asked if I would like to switch, explained some stuff to me, and I said yes i would like to switch. So she is ordering in Interceptor for me, should be here next week. So I will make the switch when I go in to work next week (vets office is just above my work)

Good to hear its all taken care of.

So did she say it was a collie thing that they can't have ivermectin? I know a husky that can't handle it but didn't know if it was the collie breed as a whole.

http://www.awca.net/drug.htm

That's a link to a collie association explaining the drug sensitivity. Collies, Shelties, Australian Shepherds, and Old English Sheepdogs all have proven to have a sensitivity to ivermectin. Some result in death.

Tank, I am glad you got it worked out. I have been on intercepter forever. I think I had to use heartgaurd just 1 time in the past.

My ? is. Why would your vet have to send out for the interceptor and for you to pick up next week? That is such a common (sp) med. Just curiouse.
