Golden Retriever Puppy Problems

I have a Golden that I got from a reputable breeder. I took her home @ 8 weeks old, she had her 1st series of shots, and was dewormed. In the past 6 weeks she has had conjunctivitis (which they now think is a clogged tear duct) - EXTREMELY DRY SKIN, a U.T.I. and ROUNDWORMS! Has anyone else had these problems and if so what can I do? The breeder said all of the other 10 puppies are fine!?!?

What are you feeding the dog? What was the breeder feeding the dog?

Worms are probably not from the breeder, since the dog was dewormed before he was sent home. It is definitely something that he picked up with you.

IMO the puppy shouldn't have been released until 12 weeks. I got my golden not from a breeder persay but from a woman who showed. She did not let hers go until 12 weeks they had all sets of first shots and dewormed along with a 2yr health garentee. I had complete health report from vet that I could phone to comfirm and answer any questions about all puppies and parents. (which I did) Just because she says all other 10 puppies (which sounds like alot from a golden) are ok YOURS isn't, ask her what vet she used if she has nothing to hide she will tell you and you could phone them and talk to them. Do you have proof he was dewormed?

Puppy came home on Purina Large Breed Puppy formula. Because of the dry skin problem the vet gave ma RELIEF oatmeal bath, and she is now on Nutro Ultra. My vet also dewormed her after her fecal came back negative - just to be safe but the "eggs hatched" and she was loaded with roundworms. The clogged tear duct is really bothering me as well as the dry skin issue.

A lot of these are very common puppy issues. Roundworms -- how was this diagnosed? If it were by you seeing the worms in the stool, this could easily be because the puppy was dewormed and is passing the dead parasite. Also, if deworming isn't followed up in 2 weeks.. it doesn't always clear infection. UTI -- common issue among female puppies. Many puppies suffer from puppy vaginitis resulting in UTI. Not a big deal.

I wouldn't be so freaked out.. this doesn't reflect the rest of the dog's life. My own dog as a puppy had roundworms, giardia, broken leg, and coccidia all in his first several months with me. He's a happy, healthy little guy now.. and for years.

I think you did the right thing by contacting the breeder. The breeder should know and want to know about any problems you are having with the puppy and usually the breeder gives you 48 - 72 hours to have the puppy checked out by your veterinarian so that if problems do arise you can take your vet records back to the breeder and request a different puppy that is healthy and problem free and if you want to keep this puppy then some kind of refund should be given. They are not serious issues now but whats not to say that in a few years this little girl is not diagnosed with alot of other problems. UTI is really common in female dogs and if you are allowing her to play in water etc alot she can catch it that way, the worms are easily able to be cured you just need patient with this. With the tear duct being clogged it can be treated but if it gets worse while being treated I would re-contact the breeder again

Thanks for your post. Breeder just didn't seem to want to be bothered AFTER the purchase. Who would even want to "exchange" the pup, I fell in love with her on the ride home It just seems like alot of little things, don't you agree?

Oh no...these were live! ugh...she had just gotten her heartworm meds and that probably stirred the little suckers up LOL. As soon as I treated her with Dontril they were gone, will follow up in 3 weeks. I do agree with you about "little problems" I just don't believe that the other 10 in the litter didn't have the same problems as I did according to the breeder

It's not that hard to believe. It's not like UTI (or any of the things you described) is a predisposed condition. Environment.

Did you receive a guarantee with this pup? No, No I would never part with the pup but the breeder should be doing something for you and helping you out or giving you some tips
