Skin funk. Home relief?

Conrad's funny skin patch has not improved. It now has a few small bumps in the mix. He is nibbling all the hair off and it looks pretty irritated. The patch is also growing in size. *sigh*

I was hoping just cleansing the area might remove the irritation but I don't think it is. The shelter supplies us with Iams Smart Puppy food for free (I wish I had better stuff! *pines for Blue Buffalo*) is it possible that he's got an allergy?

What can I do for him at home to help? I know he'll likely just lick whatever I put on it. He WILL be going to the vet, but since he is extremely fearful (he won't even leave the 2 rooms he thinks are safe!) we are waiting until we can get him a little more comfortable with the outside world.

(also, if something serious happens he will go to the vet even if it scares the tar out of him I am not trying to be the 'treat it all yourself' type )

Good clean food and an non-rancid essential fatty acid supplement like cold pressed salmon oil.

If it itches witch hazel or Gold Bond powder.

Given the location of the patch I doubt it is an allergy. I am not a vet or a dermatologist but if I was to guess I would say he scraped it somehow and has just been aggravating it ever since. Has he had access to a dog door or dog house with a small door? It's a pretty odd location and it looks to me as if he has routinely been squeezing through a rough opening.

But without a real diagnoisis all this guessing is just so much speculation. Just try and sooth the itch and keep him active and mentally stimulated so he is too tired to lick it.

You can also try Benadryl for the itches. It will not help your dog mend but in most cases Benadryl it can dry up the bumps and subdue your dog from itching.

Personally, I would get the dog to the vet as soon as you can. Things like this very seldom get better, if it all it will spread and your dog will be miserable.
