Possible Broken Leg Question

I have an 8 month old chihuahua, Bambino, who weighs 3.4 pounds. I stepped on his left hind leg while on a walk. I'm not sure if I stepped on the foot or just glanced off his leg, but he let out a horrible cry. I carried him home. He's favoring the leg at times when he walks and he held it off the ground while eating. He lets my wife and I touch it without crying. And he jumped on the couch (a pretty high jump for him). He's resting quietly in his bed now.
Does this sound like a break or a sprain? If it's only a sprain, will pet emergency room do anything?

Thanks

I would call the vet just in case it is broken. It doesn't take much to brake their little legs. That why if it is broke the vet can set it. If not broke the vet might give it some pain meds for sprain. I hope your furbaby will get feeling better soon.Plus we need to see pics of your baby.

Welcome to the forum. I have one chihuahua and one foster chihuahua. Plus 5 wolfkids.

I would crate him and not allow him to jump up or down cos he could make it worse!.
You could probably wait until Tuesday but if not better, would have the leg checked,by the vet!.

Uh, you've got to hate the holidays! Well, if when you touch it, it does not feel like the bones make any sharp angles in an odd direction, and he can stand on it when you lift the other up, it may not be broken. However, I would advise you at least call around to several e-vets for prices right now if you don't think you could afford it (some vets may have a competitive rate on certain services over others, even if they're 20 extra min away), because the sooner you can get him in the better.

Thanks for all of the great advice. I called the vet. She said if he's letting me touch his leg that it's probably not broken. If it gets worse in the next few hours we should bring him in. He's sleeping, so I'm going to put him in his pen, have dinner, and check to see his condition. Glad that I bought pet insurance! Thanks again!
