I got adopted today!

If some of you read my other thread this is a repeat, but if not here goes...I went out today with my dad (who seems to have a 6th sense with good dogs) to see a red petite foxy looking Australian Shepherd mix. What I came home with from an off-site adoption place for the pound was this
Now I was not planning on getting a male, especially a 4-6 month old one, nor was I planning on getting another heeler, but after wandering around Petsmart and cuddling on the floor with him, my dad very logically broke through my indecisive nature with a clear "you like him, right?" I brought him back to the parent's house where he met the big dogs and got along swimmingly! *happy dance* He has also gone potty outside everytime. *more dancing* Now, the worry I had was with the cats...silly me! The only thing he did was perk up his ears and look curiously at them. *confetti party* The cats were even curious, with Luna I didn't see Meeko for a few days. He throws out a very calm vibe.

But, Jasper says Hello!
He got neutered yesterday, so I have to keep this thing on his head when I can't watch him. He looks so pitiful with that thing on!
Any tricks for crate training a pound puppy who REALLY doesn't want to go into a crate? Any tips, tricks, help with just about anything would be great! What a great adventure with a great dog!

Somethingroyal is on a distinguished road
Oh he is handsome! He reminds me of my ACD mix, Acey. Sounds like they have similar temperaments too...

Don't make a big deal about the crate, going in or coming out. I always gave a tasty treat going in, with the command "kennel".Do it all calmly and matter of fact. Mine will trot right into their kennel. The good news is that (if your ACD is like mine) it wasn't too long til Acey was trustable without his crate.

I had heard about the never ending energy of ACDs and was a bit concerned when I got one, but Ace is very calm and steady. He likes to please and was easy to train...and it seems your Jasper is the same way! Good luck with him!

The only reason I am concerned with getting him crate trained is that I have cats and I am a little worried that he will be hurt by them (they had no problems showing Luna who was boss) and when school starts he will need a place to make sure that he and my home don't get harmed. I know that many of your pups just got the ol' snipperoo any suggestions?

Congrats! As for neutering, just keep him calm. If he's running and rolling around, he can open it a bit allowing for infection.
