Puppy Vaccinations

I have this posted in a separate thread (http://www.prodoggroomingsupplies.co...ad.php?t=59464) but then realized that like the horse forum, you have a dog health section as well and I figured that this would be best suited here, not in the middle of my dog training thread lol!

I just rescued a pup that is currently ten weeks. According to the rescue, his schedule is as follows:

Birthday: 3/28

Vaccination Date Given Due
DHPP: 5/18/09 6/08 (recieved today), 6/29
Rabies N/A 7/28/09
Bordatella 5/18/09 5/18/10
Heartworm check N/A 9/28/09
Worming 5/18, 6/1 6/15
Heartworm and flea 5/23 6/23

We saw the vet today, and he recieved another wormer, stool sample (they said it was fine), DHPP, k9 advantix to take home, and a heartwormer to take home, then a microchip, and a wellness exam. I spent ninety six $$.

In three weeks (then three weeks after that) they want to give him:
Wellness exam (all the doctor did today was check his ears, is paying $25 for it again nessecary in three weeks and again in six weeks?)
Bordatella (Is this nessesary?)
DHPP
Lepto 4 (what is this even a vaccination for?)
Fecal exam
Heartgard
K9 Advantix(they failed to mention that this would be an extra $17.25 for one vial every time, I've never had a dog on a flea preventative, and I've never had a dog with flea's before)
Wormer (how many wormer's does a puppy need?)

What do you normally do with your puppy's? I know I want him vaccinated for parvo, but what else is nessesary????

Would it be ok for me to ask to opt out of the wellness exam next time? the doctor only checked his ears and then said, his ears are great!

I didn't think I'd be on a budget with him until I saw what they wanted to charge me for in three weeks then again in six.

the wellness exam is basically office visit I doubt you would get out of that.Bordatella shot is for kennel cough and is really only good for 6 months so say you had Bordatella shot today and 6 months down the road you wanted to board your dog the kennel will norm tel you to get a updated shot of that.So Bordatella is a optional vaccine.Worming for pups are norm every 2 weeks untill last set of shots after that you get fecel exams unless you notice worms in stool.. you need heartworm meds and flea meds 17.00 dollers is pretty cheap a month.and yes that is normal too.My advice let the vet give the recommend shots as he know what your pup will need.

I agree....I would also like to add the Bordatella may be optianal but a good idea to get, because even if you dont kennel your dog at some point, he can still get kennel cough from just being in contact with a dog who has it...so it would be just safer to get it.

I am with you on the Bordatella i would never go with out that for my furbabies. They can get it from the air if another dog comes in your yard that has it so i weather be safe then sorry.

My breeder strictly forbids us to give a Lepto (Leptospirosis) vaccine to her puppies.

The Wellness Check is the office time. You're taking up their time, whether you like it or not.

And me personally, I don't do topical flea treatments on my dogs, so I'd opt out of the Advantix, then personally give them an internal preventative (Sentinel). The rest is normal and should be done.

By the way, welcome back.

glrbackes is on a distinguished road
Sounds just like what I went through with my puppy, however there was no Lepto vaccination. It was never brought up.
Everything sounds pretty standard, and yes very pricey. I'm not sure how much this would help but my vet suggested a 5 week period between vaccinations, he said 3 weeks was only necessary if the puppy was kept in the pound for longer. Might be something worth bringing up on the next visit, if the extra 2 weeks would help out your finances a little bit.

Thanks for the advice guys (and the welcome back ) , I am just feeling a little jipped, they told me both over the phone and in the office that my first visit would be $60 not $96 plus the 134 they want in a few weeks!!

And please answer me honestly, how many of you keep your dog on a monthly flea medication??

I dont....but only because fleas are not that common where we are...it is too cold for too long. Not saying it doesnt happen, because it does, just not that common...so I dont.
