Where to get Propylene Glycol.

I've read numerous posts on here as well as elsewhere, as to how to use ivermec as a less expensive alternative to heartguard. I have a bottle of the 1% injectable, and since we have a couple of small dogs in addition to our large ones, i want to cut it at a rate of 49.5 ml Propylene Glycol, and .5 ml Ivermec. just so that i have very strong control over the dosing.

only problem is finding Propylene glycol in a quantity under 55 gal drums.
i know other people on here use ivermectin instead of heartguard, or for treatment of mange, so where do you get the dilution?? or is there something else easier to find that i can dilute it with??

For small dogs.. you only need to use less 0.1ml as a monthly dose to prevent heartworm disease. My mom uses injectable ivermectin for her GSD's since they have food allergies. Her dogs weigh anywhere from 65 (the female) and then 100 each for the males. They were prescribed about 0.1ml, once monthly, orally for heartworm prevention.

Reminder too.. do not give ivermectin to collies or collie-like breeds (shelties, australian shepherds, border collies).

Treatment of mange gets higher dosages, but for heartworm prevention you only need drops. I don't think you need to dilute it, just dose it very carefully.

Depends on the weight, but if they are very small I would dilute- I use Ivomec but on larger dogs where it is easy to dose it correctly. Even using a turberculin syringe I would find it difficult to measure for a <10 lb dog.
A Google search turned up tons of places to buy it.
If you are intent on buying it locally I would ask my pharmacist if they will order it, or a tack shop/farm supply.

I normally use 0.1 cc/20lb and once a year or so I use a higher dosage in the range of 0.1cc/10lb (double the monthly dosage) for intestinal parasites.

There is 68mcg of ivermectin in the up to 25 lb Heartgard (or Tri-Heart, etc). Which equals .068mg of Ivermectin. If you have the 1%, that is 10mg/ml.

So the calculated dose would be 0.0068ml of ivermectin to equal what is in a heartgard tablet for less than 25 lbs. Again.. drops of ivermectin to protect against heartworm disease.

Cearbhill -- your dosing is a touch high. Unless you are thinking of pyrantel. In which case it can either 1ml/10lbs (or 0.1ml/1lb) or 1ml/5lbs.

I understand where you are coming from in extrapolating active ingredient dosages from prepared products, I do. But I choose to follow the dosing recommendations of my breeder, veterinarians who own and breed Wolfhounds, and the worldwide Wolfhound community.

I believe that it actually only takes 1/360 cc. per 10lbs. of body weight of ivermectin to prevent heart worms. The dose is actually very minute if you are unconcerned with intestinal parasites, so clearly there is a lot of leeway.

Fair enough.. but I just don't want this OP to be giving large quantities if not necessary. Just make sure to be clear when offering advice that this is from wolfhound history, and should not be okay for everyone out there.

We all know collie breeds can have sensitivities.. but many other individual patients can too. And the side affects are typically neurologic, nothing to mess with.

okay....... none of my dogs are collie or the like, they have been on heartguard, so i believe the tolerace is fine...... its just getting way too expensive to keep 6 dogs on a name brand, when the active ingredient is 35 bucks for a years worth instead. I do have to dilute it, for all but one of my dogs that is 105 lbs. the others are 16 lbs, 22 lbs, 45 lbs, 65 lbs and 75 lbs. so to make sure i don't overdose the little ones, its easier to give more of a diluted amount (the 1% ivermec diluted 10 to 1) at 1/10 cc per 10 lbs. measuring smaller than 1/10 cc is near impossible accurately.

so again.............does anyone know if tractor supply, wallgreens etc is able to order propylene glycol? everytime i ask them they have no idea what i am talking about, and just look at me confused as if im asking for a chemical to make narcotics or something.

You could probably get it from any ordering source (catalog) which sells chemicals; or check pool supply stores, or possibly home depot, since it is used as an antifreeze as well. It has a lot of uses, so there are probably a lot of places that it is available, it will just be in a different quantity, depending on where you look. I'd also check drug stores, since it can be used for soaps and such.
