Very Worried about Puppy.
Hi All..
The only reason I am posting here and not taking my dog directly to the vet is because recently my partner and I were laid off from our jobs and money is extremely tight.. Our Puppy is a Cocker Spaniel X Lab. Yesterday and today we noticed that she has had a very bad case of diarrhea. This wouldn't be so bad, but there is also a bloody discharge, that looks like she was bleeding inside.. She's still in extremely good spirits, running around, she's eating properly, drinking plenty, probably too much, cos she has been going potty in the house.. Which is normal for her.. She's 12 weeks approximately. Yesterday i noticed that she had a little temperature, but today her nose is cold and wet and the fever has gone. We recently, and inadvertently changed her food, which I thought could be case, but would this cause the bloody discharge as well?? I also thought it would be the treats that she had at grandma's.. They were beef treats, but the color of them was very red.. like bloody itself.. I normally give her Snausages dog treats. I'm very strict with what she eats usually, but the bag of food was bought for us by someone else, who didn't realize. I stopped feeding it to her the very next day when she didn't seem to want it, and bought her normal Kibbles from IAMS.. A more expensive brand of dog food.. Can anyone help shed some light, it's been only two days, but because she's not acting depressed, she's as active as ever, i don't know if a trip to the vet would be warranted. Am I panicking too early? Maybe concerned Parent syndrome? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you in advance.. You can also email me irish.ozborn@gmail.com Regards, Marc |

Puppies can get diaherra from a change in food and the red flecks you see could be pieces of food. Take a clear a clean sandwich bag and pick up the poop and give it a squishy test. (is blood throughout or only on outside?) Also check her bum to see if the diaherra may have resulted in a fissure (small tear) in her bum and that is the cause for the blood.
The biggest worry with a young dog is always Parvo. If she starts vomiting - you MUST get her to vet asap. Otherwise go back to a puppy diet -no treats and see if the diaherra clears up within 24 hours. Keep a close eye on her for any change including listlessness, pain, fever especially vomiting. Don't let it go on for more than 48 hours even if she appears healthy as she can quickly dehydrate. Please let us know how things go. |

Thank you so much for your reply.
I was extremely worried about the pup all day yesterday but I stopped her from having the treats that we gave her, and we fed her the normal food that she enjoys, mildly expensive, but we'll live. Her poop is not bloody anymore, and is of a harder texture, she is eating properly, I watched for signs of vomiting, but she didn't at all, and not even 24 hours after coming off the treats, she was looking as though there was 100% improvement.. I am going to keep a close eye on her still, but she looks like she's doing ok. I think it was a reaction to the change in food and the treats that we were giving her.. So the normal treats that she never reacted to before, which are also more expensive, but i'd rather that than anything, are probably the best bet.. We are using them as rewards whilst in the potty training stage, so to take her off it completely would leave us with just a clicker.. Anyway, thank you again, all looks to be going very well.. I appreciate your reponse. Regards, marc |

You can switch foods but do it slowly over about 15 days. Add a little of the new food and increase the amount of new food a little at a time until she is eating only the new food.
I'm glad she is doing better. Thanks so much for giving us the good news. |
