Bald spot
Ok so Gracie has allergies. So we have gotten used to a certain ammount of bald areas when she has reactions to certain things from outside and we have gotten it down to a science so we have almost no break outs anymore.
Anyways about a year ago she had a lump on her leg. So we took her in to the vet and he said nothing to worry about it wasn't sore she wasn't bother by it and he said doing testing on it now could make it worse so watch and wait. Well it went away. But she started to lick that spot about 4 months ago. She now has a bald spot there. Theres no bump there anymore and she has since stopped licking it but the hair is not growing back. It seems to be dry and peeling a bit. So I am looking for suggestions on getting that skin healthy in that area again and maybe getting some hair growth back. I thought about topical lotions (such as people stuff) but she loves to lick that stuff off (thinks its a GREAT treat ). So any ideas would be appreciated. She is fed human grade food, no corn and no chicken included. |

What is Gracie allergic to? I know my Denali has winter allergies and I deal with hot spots. I can put sulfodene (I think it's called) on her and she won't touch it (it stinks big time). The other thing is, since she has hip issues, I give Denali Fresh Factors from Springtime, Inc which does help skin and coat as well as being good for her hips and joints.

You are probably thinking of Silvadene cream (or Thermazene), Dig.
And.. what about some fish oil to help? I would be cautious with topicals because more topicals don't work with animals since they lick them off. But maybe vitamin E oil? That wouldn't be horrible if she licked it off. Just don't over do it, cause excess of vitamin e can be toxic. |

emu oil even if she licks in it is good for her, but you can kind of work it in

Well I know I should but we haven't actually had her allergies tested. But from experimenting with different foods and with what they contain we are certain she is allergic to corn and have a sneaking suspicion she is allergic to chicken as well. Her ears are the worst she used to scratch at them so much that they are actually notched in a few places (was like this when we got her). Through much food changes, she now hardly ever scratches at them.
She also use to chew on her tail, she has pretty much quick that as well. I am almost thinking this is not an allergy issue but rather a habit issue. She doesn't chew on the spot, she simply licks it. Her saliva dries out the skin even more and she starts to get the flakey skin. I am not sure if I should pick off the flakes, or leave it be. You would be surprised at what she will lick, she is an odd dog and I tried bitter lime spray on her before (to prevent chewing her tail) and she liked it .We will be taking her into a new vet here soon for a heartworm check and meds so I will ask him as my previous vet was very hands off and wait and watch type of guy. |
