FOUND DOG. Need help immediately.

**This problem has been resolved. Thank you so much for advice and your responses. She found a nice loving home.**

I am new to this forum and joined to find something out.

I found a dog on my road (Long country road in the middle of nowhere. This dog did not travel, it was dumped.) isn't any of the neighbors' dogs either.

My mom called the pound asking if anyone reported it missing and they started yelling at her telling her she is breaking the law and that we must bring the dog today. (Threatening her with jail and fines yada yada...)

I know we have 48 hours that we are allowed to contact them in and hand over the dog, but we were just trying to give it a good comfortable temporary place while we tried to find the owner. (The pound isn't exactly friendly... especially not around here)

I'm worried for it, it is older... and it's just not a good environment for the dogthere. We were just trying to find the owner. And, really. They can't tell us to bring it today, we legally have 48 hours. I just want to find the owner and say "Heres your dog, tell the pound to get off my back! They aren't going to help at all."

What would you do? I'm terrified no one will come for her, and the pound usually puts them down after 10 days.

I can't see where they can put it down if someone speaks up for it? Tell them if no one claims it you want it. At least you can by it more time and maybe you can find its owners. If it was dumped I doubt they will come forward, they will just do it again. Maybe you could find it a forever home.

As someone who is currently missing a dog in a rural area?

If there's no signs, call your local newspaper and run a found ad- they're usually free. Post on Craigslist. And lastly? Take the dog to the pound. That's the easiest place for an owner to find their dog.

Cait (Rittie is currently leading us a merry chase in Weatherford, TX)

I just don't understand why they were pressuring my mom so much to get the dog into the pound when they won't take care of it better than we are. It has food/water a comfy bed people interaction, it can go outside whenever... Instead of a metal cage.

It has no collar or tags to speak of and I'm 99.99% sure it isn't microchipped. It's a shame.

And they are worried sick that we are breaking the law... This is just sad.

If the owner dropped it off, then they're not going to claim it or take it back. So, I'm not sure why you want to find the owner...

Your only choices as I see it are to let it loose again, keep it (and maybe find it another home) or take it to the pound.

If I didn't want to keep it, I would take it to the pound. At least it would have a chance of being adopted by someone else.

I don't understand the breaking the law comment? What law is your mom supposedly breaking?

I agree with Four, if the dog was dumped no one is going to come forward. Either rehome him yourself, take him to the pound, or keep him.

You've been given good advice already - hopefully the owners will step forward.

Rittie is not chipped (I hadn't done it yet, bad owner) and she slipped her collar. That doesn't mean that I'm a bad owner. It means she has a freaking pointy head.

PLEASE take a flyer with photos at the very least up to the pound so that the owner can find you if they are indeed looking.

I'd keep him. If the pound asks, he found his owner.

I did this with a stray I found in winter. I called the vets in the area to let them know I had the dog, in case someone was looking. He was a mutt, looked like a pittie cross and didn't want to take him to the pound/shelter either. It was -35 degrees, so I kept him crated while I was at work and he stayed 3 days before his owners finally called.

If they didn't, I would have found him a home. But I have dogs, and it was easy for me to 'add' him in.
