Eating strange things.

I have had dogs that eat strange things like I had a great dan that ate the insided of a shoe once and actualy swallowed what he chewed up but he threw most of that up in about a hour. but my dog chance eats strange things. He eats paper, socks, carpet too, and i have found other strange things in his Poop when i was cleaning up his mess in my house. I have no idea why he would eat all of this stuff. His fav is my socks and small fabric a but the carpet thing realy struck me strange. He ate a huge hole in my carpet in my room. I know some dogs chew carpet sometimes but he ate a huge hole and was pooping what he ate out. He ate all the way down to the cement floor. the hole is about the size of a mlb baseball. He has only done that once that i know of but I just don;t see why he would eat it. It dosen;t seem to bother him eating this strange stuff but why would he do it? I know the sock thing maybe becuase of my smell but what about the carpet?

Why does he eat the stuff? For one, it doesn't sound like he was every trained not to. My dog eats carpet sometimes if he's anxious, or if he's skipped a meal, he'll start plucking up carpet fibres. Training is in order, it just really isn't healthy for them, something could get stuck, and he could get really sick. It's also bad manners on his behalf. Help him out a bit.

Sounds like he's either bored or suffering from separation anxiety. A crate might be your best friend to save your possessions until you can teach him not to do this.

This must be a difficult situation for you!!
But you really do need to keep everything out of reach from your dog until he learns not to eat things. Puppy proof your house the same way you would child proof it.
I agree with Moo training is definitely needed. It is dangerous for a dog to eat things like this as they can't digest them properly and also it is a very bad habit. Maybe in the meantime you could try and distract your dog with something like a Kong with peanut butter in it or an activity treat ball. Also you could try putting something like sour grapes spray on your carpet or sprinkle some hot pepper or something around the area!
Good luck!!
