Exciting News

Our local Humane Society has not put one dog down for space this whole year! Last March was the first month that happened in their 100 year history!

Over the past 8 weeks or so, they've had a few periods of time with 20-22 empty dog kennels (which is amazing!)

So I decided they needed to help out some of the over crowded shelters on the east side of the state. They agreed so to start, I brought them 4 dogs.

A German Pincsher that was misidentified as a MinPin mix, male 2 yrs
A pure bred 1-1/2 yr old female Beagle
A 1-1/2 yr old med size black and white wavy fur mix breed sweet as can be.
A 7 year old back and white sweet older girl.

All were adopted quickly.

Next time they call with 20 empty dog kennels. I decide we have had a couple of great dogs that really need to be seen outside of an internet photo. It worked. We made an agreement to show them there for a few days and provided every iota of information to best place them.

I know some would not like this idea but in the end, it's about finding dogs homes first and foremost. Would I do this with every dog, NO. Some, absolutely. (they all have our micro chip as well so we will ultimately get a call if anything occurs down the road - the safety back up plan).

We are down to just a few dog fosters in our rescue now. I'm taking this week without any intakes except maybe a Dane mix from the east side.

We are getting geared up for some adoption events next month and hopefully getting some of these kittens into new homes as well as the few very sweet adult female cats.

I will raid the shelters to the east of us next weekend!

Thats is GREAT news!

I agree with your idea of getting the dogs to where they can be seen daily. The Pit Bull I rescued from the kill shelter went to a no kill nice facility. Not the perfect situation, but better then where she was, and I have no doubt she will be adopted quickly into a wonderful home.

Thanks dombermom!
Yep, it's hard when puppies and certain breeds get 500+ hits a week on petfinder and the Berkley's (large, young black and brown boy) and Lindsay's (pit/staffie) get maybe 20 Berkley, a large, young black dog with brown fleck on his head and legs, was one we took and he was adopted and the shelter operations manangers favorite. We sent him to a week of obed school too! He was adopted after 3 days! We've had him for months!

I wish we could say that about all of our shelters T. It's really bad in my neck of the woods. No jobs, no extra money means no donations and no food. They are putting them down very fast over here because they are filled to the rim.

On the other hand...I thought you were going to tell is something exciting like you were pregnant!

Exciting??? I have Grandkids, mine are grown, I'm almost 47!!! That's a nightmare not exciting news woman!!!

Our shelter was the same at one point. Change can happen if people get off their high horse and network with each other!!! It's still this way on the east side of the state. Less populated, lots of migrant workers due to all the farms and agriculture there, less or nil low cost spay/neuter programs... the list goes on. That's why I'm trying to get others networking together to help more of the dogs!

Our shelter has reach out and outsources, now I'm getting them to take in when they are able to. It's the give and take

I thought that would blow your mind T! hahahahaha.

In our mastiff group we had a cry out for help a little more than a week ago. One particular shelter was down to their last few days of food. Believe me when I tell you it's rough in this part of the country. We have a lot of illegal aliens that believe a dog is a dog is a dog. The dogs run the streets, no shots, no anything, and animal control is picking these dogs up left and right. We have also had many heart breaking stories how people have lost their jobs and can bearly afford to feed their kids let alone their family pets. In the latter of these two incidents it is HEARTBREAKING.

I think that is fantastic. We have a great Humane Society here. The adoption rate is high and there are often empty kennels when I visit. They do a lot of television and radio marketing and hosting of events so they are given excellent exposure.

Sounds like your Humane Society is on the right track.

TX and AZ seem to be in similar boats. We are running out of foster homes so there is always a huge call out for fosters. Way to go FDM!
