Hi again folks!
I think I have my owners in a total state of confusion here. I'm an 8 year old Basset Hound and well...I guess you can tell by the title of the thread, I poop...a LOT! I eat only two cups of food a day (Nutro Lamb & Rice) which has been my steady diet for a long time now...BOOOORRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNNG!!! Along with that, I get a small biscuit treat after I eat my bowl of kibble, and another one along with a small rawhide stick after my daily walk. I on average poop 4-5 times a day, and I always here the owner people say "there's another double bagger". It's always very solid and healthy I guess. But my question is...why so much??? It seems as though I'm letting out about 3 times as much as I'm taking in. Sometimes I'll surprise them and rapid fire one bagfull 2 minutes after another. Is this normal for most dogs? I've been like this as long as I can remember, so I don't think it's much to worry about...just confusing. Any insight is greatly appreciated! WOOF!!! Coltrane |

Alot of the commercial foods ive seen say its makes the dogs pooh firm and a minimal amount...but those arent too healthy...like Iams and those other bad foods. Nutro is a very good brand.

Just for giggles - gather all the poop and see if it equals 2 - 2 1/4 cups. Maybe there is food being ingested that you are not aware of (Neighbors?)
It would be pretty difficult to poop more than is being ingested. |

Well Coltrane, I also eat Nutro and my mom always says my bum STINKS! I guess I am a little "gassy"
I know my mom has done lots of reading and talking to other humans about good quality foods, and I stay on Nutro, I can assume its a good food. I have read the information on my food, and it says I am supposed to poop less, I would hate to see what happens if I ate another type of food! How old are you? Are you sure your not sneaking treats or meals anywhere else like Aunt Dax mentioned? She is pretty smart ya know! I really dont know what advice to give you accept, remember to potty outside! So, Coltrane, are you free-fed, or do you keep mealtimes? If you are free-fed, and graze during the day, you may just be throwing your people off with the amounts of poop there really is.
How about your water intake? I don't know much about Nutro, but if there's a high fibre content, it may be sucking up water from your body, growing and as a result, coming out bigger. Any pests over there that your people don't know about? Are you the mouse eater?

Actually I'm just fed once daily...first thing in the morning, and it's just 2 cups of food. Never anything extra after that. Not even any table s***** even though I'll just sit there and hope, pray and dream about getting some
![]() I do consume a good amount of water though...about 3-4 bowls a day, so that theory makes sense about the food soaking it up. Oh well, as long as I don't have any sort of problem...I guess I'm just fiberlicious ![]() *WOOF* |

Coltrane, maybe you could ask your human to feed you twice a day. It would probably make your belly feel better. I'm not sure it would cut down on how often you pooped.
Its so hard being a dog with a smelly bum, or an over active bum. Your Friend, Clifford

I took a look at the ingredients...other than lamb and rice...there isn't much in there. That could be what's causing all the poop...remember, the more that comes out, the less that's absorbed. The stools are firm from the dried beet pulp. I don't know what the average is for pooping a day, but I'd say it's probably around 2-3. You might want to tell your people that you want to try something that you will get more nutrients out of. My people feed me Canidae and I love it! All us dogs here get it, and there are 6 of us! Our Mom cleans up the kennel everyday and our poops are small and easy to clean up. Canidae is an all natural food. It has no preservatives in it and the first 3 of 5 ingredients are meat, which us canine folk LOVE! The other 2 ingredients are brown rice and then white rice. For your weight (and cut me some slack here because I don't really know you personally, I'm just guestimating), you'd only need 1 cups, based on a 25-30 pound dog. That's a lot less, isn't it? And, you'll poop less and absorb more nutrients so you will have a nicer coat, more energy and be all around more healthier! Tell your humans to check it out at: www.canidae.com .

Good info Countryside.
My mommy just went to the store to buy a new kind of food for me and my sister. As much as I like my Nutro, the people at the pet store are not very big on it. Like Countryside said, not the best indgrediants. I think its still a good food, but there is better out there. My mommy came home with EaglePack Holistic(sp) I tried some mixed with my Nutro, and I loved it!! It a lamb and rice blend. I was taken off the beef because I may have an allergy that causes mild seizures in my face. Thats a whole different story. Wish me luck on my new food! Best of luck to you Coltrane! Your pal, Clifford |
