I'm in need of major help!
Hi everyone, I'm new here and I need some help, and I have alot of questions, so please bare with me. We have a 2 year old male chihuahua, named Pablo. Every few weeks his little tummy gets upset, his tummy starts making these terrible noises, he sleeps alot, he doesn't want to eat or drink anything, his stools for the most part are firm, but every now and then there will be softer stools with a little bit of blood or mucus. The first time this happened I rushed him to the vet, she said he had colitis, gave him 2 seperate meds, and sent us on our way. A few times since then, she would just fill the meds if I called, well yesterday I came home from work, and yet again Pablo wasn't feeling well, so I called the vet, this time she said to give him 1 tbl spoon of pepto 2x's per day for a few days. We had tried that once before and I swear it made his little tummy worse. Each of these periods last for about a day, and then he's fine just as sudden as he was sick. I hate to see him feeling so bad. Right now he is on Nutro Natural Choice for Sens. Stomachs, the only treats he eats is the Nutro brand for sens. stomachs as well. He does not get table s*****, unless he's sneeky and finds something behind our backs. No rawhides are allowed. Could he be allergic to something in his food? Rice Flour? What about seperation Anxitey from us going to work?? (sp?) He's our snuggle bunny, I know he hates it when we leave! Please if anyone can advise me on what to do... What about wellness brand food?????
Thank you for your time, Carrie |

My suggestion would be try him on a bland diet eg boiled hamburger and rice when his stomach gets upset, and maye see a different vet and seek a second opinion.

To me it sounds like your dog is not doing well on commercial dog food. He might be allergic to one of the additives or preservatives. I would ask your vet (or ask around the kennel groups in your area) to recommend a canine nutritionist. Someone who will work with you to establish an individual diet. It might not cure the issue completely but hopefully give you longer periods of “good” days.

Thanks for the help, I felt like he had to be allergic to something, I guess it's back to the detective work. Does anyone know anything about Innova EVO? Or any of the Wellness brands? They say no additive and preserivitives?! Would these be commercial dog food? Oh boy... how can anyone keep all this straight? AHAHA

Both wellness and innova are good foods and the dogs seem to do well on them, There is just plain innova or there is the Evo put out by Innova, The Welness fish and sweet Potatoe does well with dogs with allergies I was a manager for a pet shop so people came in all the time with these questions

Becky- Thank you for you info on the Wellness and Innova dog foods? I will try to change his food-again, but if his tummy gets upset again, I'm calling our vet and demand she test him for allergies. He shouldn't have to feel bad all the time. POor little guy!

The EVO is pretty pricey too, 13.99 for 3.5 lb. bag! But I will do and try anything for Pablo. I'm also going to ask our vet to do a tummy x-ray just in case, plus more blood work-ups! We shall see what happens!
