Giving Blood the procedure...

Ariel gave blood again today.. here are some pictures and the procedure.

First they take a small sample to test for hydration.
The first time they also type the blood.
They tell me Ariel is positive.

If there are no problems with hydration they proceed to the next.
Ariel is placed on a small table.
This is the most stressful part of the procedure for her.
They shave the neck and apply an antispectic wash.

Dog owner holds the head and reassures the dog while two techs
hold the legs and keep dog from moving.
My little sweetheart does not fight this at all.

The vet inserts a large needle into the jugular vein

They weigh the collection to ensure proper collection.
One pint approx 450 ml is collected.

Once a full collection is obtained the needle is removed and
pressure is used to stop the bleeding.
Dog is kept quiet for a minute or two.

Thats great you have her donating blood! At my intern hospital we used greyhounds since they are so large. She seems very comfortable donating!

Hmm.. we always layed my dog up with her head on the on the end of a table(front feet almost hanging) then held her nose up.. The vets always called her blood, chunky blood because she was a bit chunky It great to save another dogs life, and also get credit on your vet bill

She's amazing thru the procedure even when the vet is having trouble locating the vein. When we let her up - it's like nothing has happened.

My cat use to give blood well only twice but the two cats who needed it lived. He was so good about it didn't even need to sedate him. Its a good feeling to help other animals out.

It doesn't really affect Ariel. She does sleep good that nite. We usually go for our walks before so she doesn't seem any different to me.

This Ariel's second time - she is fully awake and unsedated for the whole procedure. If they need to be sedated - they are not considered a good candidate to donate.

My dog was never wiped out, of course she wasn't the most active and we always have her a small meal of canned food afterwards.
