Nursing Question

Hi ,

Our dog had Puppies last saturday.
Everything appeared to be fine. We noticed today that her lowest nipple toward her rear, has become very swollen and hard the other ones are fine . we cant tell if its just clogged or infected but it is hot. has anyone ever seen this or heard of this...she seems fine and it doesnt seem to bother her.

I'm not sure but if I was you I'd post this in the Dog Breeding forum. There might be more people on there who will know what it is. Did you take your dog and her puppies to the vet to get looked over after she had the puppies? If not I'd do that soon or ring and ask your vet what he/she thinks. I hope everything is ok with her!

Sounds like masstitis(SP) an infection. You should take her in and get some antibotics for her

She needs to get to a vet asap, it does sound like mastitis. If you can't get her there today you can try expressing the milk by hand from this nipple, it may be full of pus and bloody etc so don't let the puppies drink it. Then put hot and then cold compresses on it. If you don't get your dog to the vets then the skin might die and the teat might abscess. Also your dog will be unwell may stop eating and run a fever.

Cool Thank You all

It was Mastitis.

We took her to the vet she spent the night there. we bottle fed the puppies ...what a chore they hate that stuff.... they gave her antibiotic and IV to replace fluids . We did the hot compress thing that alowed the Pus to seep we squeezed it and drained it almost a cup of fluid drained ... she is so much happier the puppies are doing great they have doubled in size. She is healing just fine...
