Was told I was buying a nonshed dog......

Help! My allergies are killing me! I bought a darling **** a poo 4 weeks ago. She has more **** than poo in her. I've been dealing with swollen eyes and sneezing since. She sheds like crazy! If I get her hair cut short, will that help? My precious little boy is crazy about her. My eyes are so swollen now, I can't wear eye makeup. My doctor prescribed allergy eye drops but they aren't working.......HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah cockapoos. Cocker spaniels have allergens.

And while it's true, a cockerpoo won't shed, it may have some dander (coming from the cocker side), which is what most people are allergic to (Also coat oils). I'm really not sure what your options are, sorry.

Thanks for your replies!

I bathed her this afternoon then picked her up and started playing with her. I started sneezing and my eyes started itching right away. I also trimmed a small area of hair off her hind leg to see if her hair was shorter if she would still shed. I gently pulled on the shorter hair and it came out in a clump. I've taken her to the vet twice for shots. The vet says she is very healthy and that all dogs shed. I can't deal with this! I feel so bad because we are all attached to her. I should've followed my instincts and got a poodle instead. I dog sit for a lady with 2 and was raised with one so I know I'm not allergic to them.

I guess I'll place an ad in the paper for her .

All dogs do lose hair. It's just that it doesn't drop all over the place. So technically, they lose hair, but don't shed. Even poodles will lose some when you pull/comb it out. But it's the dander, not the actual hair that you are allergic to. As long as you know you are not allergic to pure poodles, it's a good choice.

Sorry that you're going to have to get rid of the pup.

I've never had a dog that sheds. Only been to neighbors houses that have them. Just holding Carly for a few seconds gets hair all over us. My daughter just came in and picked her up for maybe 15 seconds. We used the rolled sticky wand over her and it was full! Even after bathing and brushing her. Is this normal?

I'm going to try on last thing and get on some Zyrtec. We'll see what happens. I've got a very, very sad little boy. My poor eyes are killing me. I'm a flight attendant who can't wear any eye make up right now!

Thanks so much for answering my questions!

Well, first of all, are you sure of the mix? A cockapoo would lose hair, but not much of it. Did you see both parents? Or is it from a pet store or shelter, and the breeds are best guess?

We sat for a chihuahua here back in January, and that thing lost hair in bushels, especially since I'm used to only seeing fur out if I cut or comb it out.

The lady I bought her from showed me pictures of the parents. The mom was cocker and the dad was the poodle. I really think she has more cocker in her than poodle. I also wonder if the parents were mixed. The pictures weren't that good and the dad looked a little like he was a mixed poodle. I'm just kicking myself. I should've asked more questions but we were caught up in the moment and fell in love immediately.

I'm allergic to cats. I always know when we have a cat onboard because I start sneezing and my eyes start itching. Is their dander or whatever it is that causes allergies, the same with long hair dogs?

Thanks!

Dander in short hair dogs, dander in long hair dogs. I consider a poodle to be a long haired breed.

Yes, it's the same, but the amount varies. A dog that doesn't shed and has long hair, may still cause allergies because of their dander and oils. A poodle has low dander, and are considered hypo-allergenic. On the other hand malteses and shih-tzus, although they do not shed, they do have very greasy coats, and do have a moderate amount of dander.

For allergies, I believe that the following are the best breeds, fine non-greasy coats and low dander: Poodles, bichons, cotons de Tulear, Bolognese, Havanese, portugese water dogs, soft coated wheaten terriers and chinese cresteds.
