Dogs generally go into heat twice a year.

Curious as to what your reasons are for wanting to breed?

Dont breed, if you want to experience it, foster a pregnant dog from a shelter.

There's a sticky at the top of this forum. It tells basics... But there really should be some reason that you would want to breed... bettering the GSD breed. Hips, elbows, eyes should be checked and rated well, achievements? Obedience, etc.

Fostering, as Pooch says, would be a good idea as well.

I hate to say this but if you don't even know how many heat cycles a dog has a year are you knowledgeable enough to even consider breeding? Your dog might be a wonderful dog but there is nothing to say that her pups will be.

Please read some reasons why you might want to reconsider:

If you still wish to breed - you should invest time and money in reading up on the entire process. As Moo advised, stuck to the top of the breeding forum is a thread with several good reference links.

I think that it's great you want to learn about breeding before you go ahead and do and obviously everyone will have questions they need answered about the topic and you are right everyone does need to learn, but at the same time breeding is a very serious commitment and you should be 100% sure about it before you decide to venture into it with your dog. This is a great site and I have been given very helpful advice about my dog while she was both pregnant as well as since she's had her babies. I don't think the people on here have serious problems. They all care about dogs and don't want to see anymore homeless pups in the world. There are many people who rush into breeding and then find once the pups are born that it has been a big mistake and far more work than first anticipated. Like the others have suggested I'd do more research on the topic first. There are many informative books and websites that can help you. Also I think it is vital that before any breeding takes place your dog (and the stud) have both been checked by the vets and given the all clear for any defects/health problems and been rated high. Also I believe that any breeding dog should have a great temperament and it should be a credit to its breed standard. Also you say you want to breed your dog next summer but don't know how many heat cycles they have. Has she had any? In my opinion no dog should be bred before the 2-3 heat. I don't think anyone is saying that you can't breed your dog simply that you should put more thought and research into it. Having pups is a very time consuming process that is very rewarding if done correctly but it isn't an easy decision and you should consider all the pros and cons before getting into it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
