Question

I have a 7 month old German Shorthaired Pointer, which has not been to any 'official' training class. yet. We've taught him the sit, come, stay, down commands, but I would still like to get him into training - but I am having some opposition at home.
What is the latest age to start a dog in training?

IMO, you can enroll a dog in training in any point in their life and have it benefit them, but I especially suggest it for a growing puppy, such as yours, so they can better learn to socialize, and contribute in a good way to society (my dog will sit and stay at home, but no where else, so training classes were a must). I consider training classes to be required for any dog.

For the opposition at home:

Training classes aren't just to teach the dog the basics but to enforce the basics when there are distractions like other people and other dogs.

It's all well and good that your dog can sit at home - but can he do it in a room full of other dogs and noise.

It also teaches them puppy manners and focus. Things that are critical when they reach those teenager period.

It's like a child - you might be able to teach them to read & write but that doesn't mean they shouldn't go to school.
