I have a 5 month old wheaten terrier who likes to do things we tell him not to. He goes on the couch, we clap say HEY and take him off. But 30 seconds later he's back on it. Everywhere we tell him not to go, he goes. And the dog beds and towels around the house for him stay empty. Any suggestions? I even tried one night to sleep with a dog bed to try to get it to smell like me so he would sleep in it. (fyi: very uncomfotable). We don't know what to do to keep him out/off of where we don't want him.

There two ways.
1) correct when ever he tries to get on furniture and crate when not supervised. 2) make the couch or bed unfortable. Tin foil, mouse traps under newspapers, etc. or combination of both. |

My friends have a wheaten; when they don’t want him to go on something they take a soda can and fill it with pennies; they shack it if he’s on something he’s not suppose to be on and say no. If he’s not allowed in a room they then set cans around the doorway so he gets scared. Good Luck and post pictures if you can!

We haven't been to any classes yet because we were told to wait until he was 6 months old. I will try the tin can idea because i just talked to a neighbor and they said that was the same method they used and it worked. Here's a picture, it is from the first day we got him at 2 months old. He's a lot bigger and a lot whiter.

LOL. sorry, on reading your first post I had a mental image of you asleep on a dog bed.
You could have put a jumper of yours on it to acheive the same result!! You can start training after they have had their last set of vaccinations, just wait for 2 weeks for full immunity, then off you go. Most of all here you need to teach your dog the word NO. Put the bed that you DO want your dog to sleep on near your couch, so he feels part of the family. Use the tine can method by all means, but you can also do this, it will help in other areas of basic training. Put a lead on your dog, sit on your couch, when he goes to jump up, pull him back down and make him sit on HIS bed, reward, praise, do this consistantly, he will soon pick up that his own bed is just as good, if not better. |
