My dog tends to show aggression to people walking by my house. The hair on her back stands up and she barks viciously--even though she is normally a very friendly dog. I know she is attempting to show her protective nature towards her territory, but I need this behavior to end. What are some ideas on a hidden fence or some type of collar training device?? Any other suggestions would be appreciated

If you have the time you can break this habit with training.

Pick a very busy time when there are lots of people going by. Put dog on a leash and sit in front. Any reaction = firm NO no reaction = Good dog.

Tell her very plainly how you want her to behave. Do it often.

Help with your dog....

If your dog is acting that way you may need to invest in a pinch collar(choke chain). Then sit out when it is the busiest & when the hair stands up & she starts to bark pop the choke chain & tell her "NO!",but if she doesn't do anything praise her.Eventually she will get to the point of where she is like okay this is completely unexceptable!!!! Good Luck on training her. Hope everything works out.If you need anymore help just ask.

I would have this dog evaluated if it is territorial or protective then yes employ the pinch collar now if it is fear you will just be aggravating the situation.

Picking a busy time can cause more stress than good. It also might be hard to find a busy time if there isn't a time when lots of people walk by. My suggestion would be to try to desensitize her, there will take some time but will be effective. Get the help of a friend preferable one that your dog doesn't know and have him appear just within eyesight and the step out of eyesight. See what your dog does. If no reaction then lots of praise. If there is reaction just ignore her and have your friend repeat action until there is no reaction whatsoever from your dog. Increase the amount of time and distance your friend comes in. Whenever the dog shows a reaction, the decrease the time or space. Like I said this might take time but it is also ALL positive reward, no punishment of any kind (which the the training method I prefer.)

Yes with Whiskey's we are working slower times, less people so we can focus on desesitization to one trigger at a time, to overwhelm the puppy/dog is looking for a disaster.

This dog is only showing territorial aggression not people aggression. It will do no good if you have to sit for a couple of hours before someone goes by. You should only do less than 1/2 hour of any training in the beginning.

Keep socializing her in other situations - dog parks, classes, etc.

As Doglover said, you need to socialize your dog, take her out from the fence on a lead and let her be petted by your passersby, go the obedience school, they are not just for obedience there are a lot of people there for socialization too.
It is not so much a question of training your dog not to do this, a dog is naturally protective, you need to teach your dog you don't need such intense protection, that other people and dogs are ok.
