Teeth chattering by an unneutered male is often the sign that there is a female in season near by.

Is Billy neutered, how old is he? Is this a possibility?

Sammy sometimes chatters his teeth, usually when he's really excited when I give him his food. He sits waiting for me to let him go eat, and chatters his teeth, as if he is "shivering"... that what you mean, right? Not sure what the cause is though. It also happened once when he had a rash/infection/or something bothering his foot. (There's an old thread regarding it) He would lick his foot really bad, then look up and his teeth were chattering.

From the previous posts, it seems like it happens in many different instances, so I can't really help you on the reason. Sorry

    Found this online....
My dog's teeth chatter when he gets excited. Should I be worried? Answer Teeth chattering isn't all that unusual in dogs. It's most likely just a nervous habit, particularly since your dog only does it when he's excited. You and your veterinarian should check his mouth for any signs of oral disease (swollen or bleeding gums, broken teeth, etc.), but if you don't see any signs of it, the teeth chattering shouldn't be a problem. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't happen more frequently or become more severe.

    Maybe he's just really excited?!

they go potty and he sniffs it. It's my first sign Sorry it's grosse but true.
The vet said some boys do it even if they catch a wiff of any urine!

Way before I had gotten Ang ... Roo was doing this every where Ginger laid or while he was walking behind her. She has been fixed 8 or more yrs ago but he still has a fascination with her. The funny thing is he doesn't do it with Ang at all. Even when she was in heat he had no interest. But then again Roo is a strange dog.

My friend's dog is a greyhound neutered male.. living in a house by himself.. and he chatters. It's definitely a nervous habit, he's always shaking too. He does so often and so quickly it sounds like he is purring. It's kind of cute.
