I need some Avice

Hi, I have just got my new dog from the pound. He is a 2yr old rotti x Sheppard.
My problem is he keeps jumping our gates and tries to run off. We live on a property so space isnt a problem, the house yard is set on 2 acres. The fence and gate are about 5ft high. I also have another dog he plays with but he still jumps the fence. Can anyone give me any ideas about how I can try and keep him in, or retrain him. Anything at all as I have gotten atatched to my big fella and I dont want to lose him.

You could try and do what bordercollieluv said, but what you can also do is give him a job or sumthing important. And show him he's loved. How long have you had him?

To build a bigger fence it would have to be a 2 acre fence as that is the house yard size. We got him 4 days ago. He is loved, sleeps inside by the fire when we are home, is out on a chain when we are out along with my other dog. Also runs along side the motorbike everyday over the 40 acres for exercise. Is given big bones to help keep him busy. But last night i gave him his dinner, then put him outside to go to the loo and he jumped the gate. He will be desexed asap. I just dont know what to do as I dont want him living on a chain when I cant watch him.

I would say the neutering will halp a great deal, it will take a few weeks after surgery for all of the testosorone to be gone.
If you can be out with him, and when he get close to the gates yell at him and tell him NO! In time it should improve. 4 days is not very long, he has been through alot! I got my female Doberman from a rescue, and it took her months to figure things out! Give him lots of love and time!

if I were you, I'd string a one strand electric fence about nose high maybe 3-4 feet inside of the gate... that will keep the dog away from the fence, but if the dog desires to jump, they will jump both the electric line and the chain link.

For the time being, you may not have a choice other than to chain the dog. Might not be ideal, but at least the dog will be safe there.

There must be SOME reason he's jumping the gate. Why don't you try to train him to whistle? I've just recently met a wandering dog who was not fixed, but when his owner whistled to him, he went running back to his home. You could also try what KellyJean said, though he might shock himself and still not learn to avoid it, rather fight it, causing himself harm. There is something called a Spike in NZ, which can be pushed really deep into the ground like a screw so that it's not loose, and then there's a chain attached to it.

Are there any girl dogs in your area? Or local dumps, or a butchery, or something like that? Is he a good eater?

That's all I can think of now, but my mind is working!!

Hey I just had a brilliant idea!!! You could let someone stand outside the fence during the day, and then when he try's to jump it, they could throw pebbles at him! Or rocks, but don't try stones!! Or you could install a vice that makes a loud noice whenever it scans something going over it. Another thing is maybe he just likes agility!

There are some kennels you could build with a roof so they can't jump out. It's a great way to keep your dog safe when you are not around to watch him. Also it lets you give him time to adjust.

hi, yes I learnt my neighbours dog was trained with a stock whip, whenever it looked like goin out on the rd or to the next door neighbours place the stock whip was cracked and she went running home, so I may try that if worse comes to worse. I have thought about the hot wire aswell but will have to wait til my partner comes back from his truck job to give me a hand setting it up. There is a dump down the rd but he was still 2ks away from it when I found him yesterday out on the rd. Not sure about the neighbours dogs as we are new to the area. I have watched him all day and when he has gone near the fence/gate I have yelled at him, sad bad dog then called him back, when he comes back he gets a big praise and a cuddle so he knows he is a good dog. Any more suggestions would be really handy. As if one doesnt work I will try something else.
