When to sperate the Bitch from her house mate

I Have a jrt Bitch who was mated yesterday, hope she is in pup! I was wondering when she needs to be seperated from my other jrt who is the dad, they have lived together since she was a pup and he wines when shes not with him, they play together all the time (it drives me mad) when she's in later pregnancy I know she has to be careful, but at what stage should I seperate them? And after the birth (if she is in pup) is it ok for him to have contact with the babys when the are older? He has a very gentle nature and gets on with all other dogs, I would be gratefull for any advice you all can give, thanks.

Im sorry I cant help you. I have no males in the house had to ship my female to the stud dog. I am sure give it a little bit more time and someone will be on here to answer your question. Patty (country-side breeders) helps me a bunch with questions hopefully she will be on here soon.

Good Luck!!!!

In a situation like this, with an intact male in the house, only you can be the judge. In the later stages of pregnancy your bitch will most likely be uncomfortable and crabby and she will let him know when she has had enough. But you still need to supervise them at this point. And you may have to separate them, but you have to do what is best for your bitch and the pups and a few weeks of separation might just have be to dealt with.

And as far as contact with the pups, again you have to be the judge and so does you bitch. He is not going to know that those are his puppies. So he is not going to be nuturing to them as momma is. Even though he might be a gentle calm dog that gets along with other dogs, hormones and pups and everything involved can have an effect on the dogs.

Can you tell us your dogs' names please? It would make me happy so that I can stop call the female a bitch, LOL

Yep Sure there names are Barney and Jessika, I posted there names in the intro topic but forgot to post them here LOL, Yeah thaught as much she will def tell him when shes had enough, think I might try getting him used to not being with her 24-7 so its not such a shock for him as he will prob pine

I never seperate my dogs until she's in delivery. Carver is (and I say that with a HUGE grrrr, because she's never been late...always right on her due date!!!) with all the dogs right now. Even after the pups are born, there is still interaction amongst them. Carver is a very easy going mom, she lets whoever into the whelping box with her. Hank goes in and lays in there with her and the pups. You really have to know your dogs in order to do that though. You just can't assume that they will be ok, because the natural instinct in the males may take over and tell him to kill the pups. If Hank is in with the litters (no matter whos litter it is) I am always with supervising. After the pups are old enough to get around, I take them out and they play with Hank and he could care less...except for when they mistake his "thing" for a nipple...then he gets a bit upset, but just lets out a growl and shifts around. Mom will also let him know how close he can be to them...listen to her and watch her reactions towards him after she delivers. How many times did you breed them?
