Sam's home from the vet

Well, after much internal debate, I decided that if someone would be at the vets overnight, that Sam would stay there for the night, and otherwise he'd some home with me at the end of the day.

No one was staying overnight, so Sam's home now, after being neutered and microhipped this morning. I figured that if no one was there, no one would know that he was having an emergency. If he's with me, then at least I will know that he's in trouble and can call for help if he needs it.

They said that he started to lick at the incision shortly before I got there, and so he was fitted with an E-collar. But, I took that off as soon as we got home, because I know that he listens to me when I say no. And he did try to lick, and I said no, and he looked at me and then laid back down again. No worries at all. He's now curled up and snoozing, and is supposed to sleep well tonight. I have pain meds for him for the next week (is he going to hurt that long???) and a registration for his new microchip.

Anyone know how to stop the police stations from calling to beg for money? I might be sympathetic, but they just now called and woke up my dog. grr...

So, we're home, he's been out of surgery since 10 this morning, and everything is going great. Be prepared to be there for him though, in case things start going not great

Thanks!
Kelly

Great No point in staying behind all alone. Careful though, if no eyes are on him be sure to stick the collar on... given that he doesn't figure out in 30 seconds how to take it off.

I doubt he'll hurt for a week. I had no pain meds for neuter. Just the initial sedatives pre-surgery; and Kirby was back on his feet by the end of the day.

Since you have the pain meds, I'd use them. Many vets don't give them but where I work we care about pain and surgery always causes some discomfort. It's also an anti-inflammatory for faster healing. We never keep our neuters or spays overnight unless there was a problem, so I'm glad you were able to take him home with you; sounds like he'll be happy being with Mom tonight. Take care, I'm sure he'll do fine.

Moo, I didn't realise you were neutered too and you didn't need any pain meds for it... interesting

Glad he's ok, I think you made the right decision with taking him home he'll be happier and less nervous and will probably heal faster because of it. I agree with Moo and would keep the cone on when you are asleep/in the shower etc to make sure it heals as fast as possible.

Thanks

I'm going to give him the meds, even though I was suprised to get them. I'd rather have him not hurting if I can make it that way.

He's already run at the cat, and he can hop in and out of the car, I'm sure that he'll do fine. We've got the night off from doing chores, so we're just lounging at home... but, I'm hungry and there's nothing to eat here... gonna have to do something about that. I'm glad to have the collar, but I don't have a lot of worries about needing it much more... and I'll have to see how he's doing tonight, not sure that he'll sleep well with it on... if he's not acting like he wants/needs to lick, then I might leave him be... but, we'll have to see!

I'll definatly give Sam a ginger hug from you and Poppy, BE!

Kelly
